Just bought an MGF just for it's engine but......
I've been looking out for a low mileage 1.8 K series Rover / whatever for a while to transfer the base engine into my S1 track shed which to be fair to it has never missed a beat and gone well but it has done nearly 100K miles and is now using a litre of oil every trackday so it feels on borrowed time....
Anyways this ad turned up last week on Gumtree in Hull for a year 2000 one owner MGF 1.8I VVC with documented 23K miles since new in British Racing Green so as I was down there with work anyway I just took down the towing dolly, went to see/drive it, negotiated it for £400, loaded it up & headed home.
The problems start when I gets home as this 23K miles MGF looks, sounds and runs great and when Mrs Uncleron and the crew see it they then want to keep it for a while before I howk the engine out of it & scrap it - Especially the 19 year old daughter who can really see herself doing some roof down posing for a couple of months whilst she's home from Uni for the summer.
I'm not in a hurry for the engine so a quick research on insurance implies I can't get a policy in daughters name with me/Wendy as additionals for under £1800 - Any of you guys found any ploys that would let me insure the MGF for Kirsty at 19 for up to £200 for the 2 months only???
Someone must know a cunning plan!

Insure it as you as policy holder, daughter as named driver.
Been doing it for years.

I believe that's known as fronting and may be illegal... However if you or the Mrs happen to be the main driver of the car it's perfectly legal, but I don't think that's what the question was

Fcuk 'em.
Perfectly legal for you to insure it in your name as main driver, and kid as named driver. Both the boys are offshore so away half the time, Clare is in Dubai so only home twice a year.
No way that they can dispute that, so as I say, fcuk 'em.

Can you not add a car onto an existing policy for short term cover??
Other half did something similar a few years ago, bought a new car and was selling the old one privately so had it insured on the same policy for her sister to drive, think total cost for 6 weeks was about £90. Worth asking.....

Re: Just bought an MGF just for it's engine but......
Direct Line allowed me to take out a discounted policy for the runaround, mirroring the no claims. Very cheap and will allow me to build up a second lot of no claims discount.
May be worth trying your current insurer.

give admiral multicar a ring. i find them really flexible cheap and easy to add and take the elise off for half the year.
i find them really good to deal with.
proof is usually at claim time tho which i have no experience of or confidence in

Don't do as Tut says, daughter could be done for driving without insurance - 6 points which is a ban for a new driver IIRC. It's not just the "we won 't pay out" scenario.

Re: Just bought an MGF just for it's engine but......
Do you know anyone with a large fleet of sports cars that will probably have a blanket fleet policy?
Re: Just bought an MGF just for it's engine but......
Thanks Guys!
Just now Wendy & I have her A4 and my Freelander 2 & Elise 111r on a multicar policy with Aviva - I did call them and suss out if I could swap any of our cars with the MGF for a couple of months and that part was ok, what ended up scuppering that plan was that Aviva would not insure the MGF's insurance group for any driver under 21.
Just like to shape it for Kirsty if I could at reasonable bucks- The cars a freebie and she would love running around in the wee MGF over the summer if I could sort a plan....

Re: Just bought an MGF just for it's engine but......
How could she be without Insurance Greg, she would be a named driver just as Verian was and all the kids?
If she was a learner she would have to be a named driver on your policy.

Re: Just bought an MGF just for it's engine but......
Tut, no doubt Greg has the technical details, but in my simplistic view it is because the policy was obtained without giving complete details.
You cannot claim to be the main driver of a vehicle that you rarely drive if somebody else does drive it regularly.

Tut is saying his daughter is a named driver and drives it rarely. What is the issue with that?robin wrote:Tut, no doubt Greg has the technical details, but in my simplistic view it is because the policy was obtained without giving complete details.
