Blu ray player advice (amp3 input?) NLC!

Post by vet111s » Mon Apr 07, 2014 10:02 pm

Bit of a long intro-been using my DVD player through Marantz pm-66 amplifier and floor standers for listening to CDs. Obviously also play DVDs too. DVD player has now seen better days and looking to upgrade and a blu ray player is the obvious option.
I had been going to get the Sony bdp-s790 which had analogue as well as digital so I can upgrade my amp in due course. Of course now it's unavailable. The current crop of sonys do seem a good option with the network capability but none have analogue out.
Any options folks? How good are low end dac units?
Budget is sub £200 mark
Cheers

Ali

The Sony's seem to be pretty good as budget bluray players.

this unit -

Is a good single input/output DAC - available online all over the place.

If you don't want a PS3.

The ps3 is a great option, and receives firmware upgrades over time (maybe less so now with the ps4 being out), and has some smart features such as iPlayer and netflix capabilities. If you have a media server and no smart TV, they will also happily play media from it across your network, and they are wireless - all features that you might not find in a budget BluRay player. The ps3 plays 3D BluRay too if you have a 3D TV, though I seem to recall something about them not doing HD audio with 3D discs..
Plus, above all that, you can buy some games for it!

The only downside imo is that the ps3 remote doesn't have an off button, and is REALLY easy to turn on..
Any (or almost any) button on the remote will turn the ps3 on, and to turn it off, you need to press and hold the Playstation 'P' button, and select the turn off console option on the menu (meaning you need the TV - or you need to get up and press/hold the button on the console), plus the remote is bluetooth, so it works pretty much anywhere, not just line of sight!
Ok, maybe not much of a problem, but if you have kids playing around, you might find the ps3 is on more than you'd like..

Have to say, hadn't thought of the ps3. Never owned a games console so hadn't crossed my mind. Not sure whether it'll fit in my cabinet though.
