i'm currenlty using google chrome as it works with my nike fuelband but over the last fortnight it's changed so that every single time i click on anything at all some fookin advert pops up! so it's getting binned

what's a good search engine that just let me do my thing without spamming the life out of me

Sounds like something (virus or similar) has got to your computer / settings in Chrome. No such issues with Chrome for me. Should add, I am by no means an I.T. expert, so take my advice / comment on the matter with some skepticism.

I use Chrome or Safari on my MBA with none of those problems, so does sound as if you have been got at.

Just checking before I get blamed for stating the obvious.

Chrome = browser

Google = search engine.

You can choose what search engines are integrated into your browser in the settings. You may have picked up a search facility with a recent software install. So check you settings for that first. It's worth experimenting with different browsers anyway so give something else a try. Most people think highly of chrome though.

I use IE and bing and other than a lack of webGL support it works fine.

Have a look under setings->extensions and make sure there isn't an ad type extension (or indeed something that doesn't look like it should be there)
You should be able to disable and test before removing.

Failing that, download a malware scanner such as https://www.malwarebytes.org/ and run it.

Definitely sounds like malware, or potentially a virus..
