Flood Risk - Buildings/Contents Insurance

Post by Doc883 » Thu Jan 16, 2014 1:39 pm

Anyone had their Home Insurance Renewal in recently and discovered they are suddenly in imminent danger of being flooded ?
My insurer Aviva have upped my renewal by 80% with no explanation in the covering letter. When I phoned in to challenge the quote they said our postcode was in a High Risk Flood Area. Funny that, been in this house for 15 years and nobody in this area has ever flooded. When I pointed out that the nearest river was 1 mile away and significantly lower they said it was a risk of flooding from "Surface Water". I'm not sure who provides Aviva with their data but 10 mins on Gocompare brought up quotes £1000 less using the same postcode/address.
I wonder if this has anything to do with this SEPA si9te and whether other people will start to get similar shocks come renewal time ?

It's interesting - pretty much our whole village is in the same postcode. We're on the side of a reasonably steep valley and the houses right at the river's edge are in the flood area. Our house (and the majority of the village) is at least 50ft higher than the fields next to the river that will flood. Wonder if the insurance company will look only at the postcode come renewal time...

When my buildings insurance renewal arrived in November it was the usual 10% hike. Money super market suggested Tesco at 25% of the cost (all other quotes were higher than my current quote). I was skeptical - and so when I telephoned them I walked them through all the fine details, explained the style of house, the (eye watering) rebuildings cost quoted on my renewal notice, etc., etc.

They didn't care - more than happy to insure!

Of course if I have to claim, that might turn out to be a disaster ... fingers crossed I never find out!

Cheers,
Robin
