Gran Tourismo 6
Finally got round to playing gt6, having fun beating Shug's times in the license tests! Great feature being able to compare friends times.

What's it like, any better than gt5?
Not sure why they brought gt6 out so close to the ps4 launch, no doubt it will be another 3+yrs before we see gt7 available on the ps4.

It doesn't feel drastically different to gt5 so far, very familiar but yet to hey into it. I think it was a similar sorry when gt3 came out just before the ps3

An intelligent person would look at a platform with an installed base of 70 million, in this case PS3, and an installed base with zero – PS4 – and “work out where the economic potential lies,”.
Steve.
Re: Gran Tourismo 6
No reason why they couldnt make it available on the PS4 too, but yea I suppose it is just to wring out as much profits as possible.
I remember I bought my PS3 for granturismo 5, then like everyone else had to wait 4 years before it came out
This looks much more appealing, as long as the game play is up to the realism of GT -
It is coming out on the PS4
Fullscreen and HD a must

Going to pick this up when the price drops a little.
The GT5 servers are being shut off in May too to force people who want online functionality into GT6. Rather more agreesive retirement of game functionality than has been seen previously.

Re: Gran Tourismo 6
I do the bare minimum to get through the licenses, get the bonus cars and move on. That bit is as dull as dishwater. I'd be disappointed if you weren't beating me.
GT6 vs GT5 - very similar. Think of it as a GT5.5 and you won't be far wrong. More tracks, cars that were non-premium models (just brought over from the PS2) have been revamped so the exteriors are now premium quality, in the majority. More modern and classic cars. Much more streamlined menus (worth the purchase price alone as GT5 was horrific in the menus) and no longer waiting for older cars to pop up in the used dealerships. The tyre model is different, so normal road cars on normal road tyres now feel a lot better and move about properly on the brakes, adding to the challenge.
If you put a lot of hours into GT5, like me, and you liked it despite its faults, GT6 will give you similar enjoyment. Not perfect - the sound of most cars is still poor (although some progress has been made with some of the newer ones and Polyphony promise it's being worked on) All in all, I've spent lots more money on things that I see far less use out of, so I'm happy with it.

Re: Gran Tourismo 6
Actually, PS4 has a completely different architecture to PS3. Main problem early on with PS3 is that it didn't have a remotely similar hardware architecture to the standard PC framework. Meant it could do a lot, but also meant that code had to be specifically written to properly use it. Hence in the early days there were a lot of sloppy ports that ran badly on PS3 versus the X Box 360 (that was basically a PC in a console box)philthy wrote:No reason why they couldnt make it available on the PS4 too, but yea I suppose it is just to wring out as much profits as possible.
PS4 has moved to more PC architecture, so I bet they'll need to re-write the GT code at a basic level - a quick port wouldn't work and having a sloppy version on GT on the new flagship console would be a proper PR disaster.
I definitely think of GT6 as more of a heavy patch of GT5 - the game it should really have been.
There's a demo/work-in-progress of project CARS out there on PC. Not tried it myself (PC isn't up to it) but I read it's a bit too arcadey in the way the cars handle. It's got classic Lotus F1 cars in it that you can just ride around slotting in lap records on your second lap - not really up there even with GT (which isn't that realistic itself) for accuracy... Shame - it looks good.

Have you heard the engine note of the Red Bull Junior car? It sounds very nice nice and it hint's at the future direction for the engine audio (which is terrible but overall does not ruin my enjoyment of the game).

Always thought that one of the most realistic handling racing sims was the FIA GT Racing PC game.

Always fancied trying out GT Legends (by the same company), but switched from PC to Mac 5 years ago, and don't fancy a buggy experience running under a VM...

Re: Gran Tourismo 6
FIA GT & GT Legends used the ISI gMotor engine, used by rFactor (which is written by ISI - GT and GT Legends licensed the engine). rFactor 2 is now out, but still light on content and buggy. There is a demo you can download to see if it would work well enough on a VM - I know Graeme Fraser had iRacing working well on a Mac in a VM.

Re: Gran Tourismo 6
I have had a chance to play GT6 and would agree it is the game 5 should have been from the off, though 5 did improve greatly as it was patched. Having been an Xbox 360 player I had always preferred F4 but as GT got better I started to look for a more Sim orientated experience.
One of the PC's from the office, which was surplus to requirements, ended up with a nice but cheap older generation graphics card to allow me to play a few sims to see whether I fancied making the swap, I now hardly ever (apart form occasional games with mates) play F4.
I bought the Simbin bundle on Steam for something stupid like £13 to add to Richard Burns Rally which was £7, these titles alone which include GT Legends/Race 07/GTR2 are all excellent and give a real taste of the more sim orientated experience for anyone who fancies the change. A particular highlight is the Caterham Pack in Race 07 with the modding community version of Knockhill
What ultimately made the decision for me is the lack of compatibility of my wheel setup with the new consoles and the lack of any proper sim games up till now (and none likely in the near future) for PS4 or XBOne. The other main gripe I have always had is the lack of tracks, I don't need 500 cars and a limited number of tracks, the modding community provide a vast number, I think for GTR2 there are over 500 tracks.................http://www.nogripracing.com/index.php
If you fancy taking the plunge I'd highly recommend this............Game Stock Car 2013 by Reiza Studios............ http://game-stockcar.com.br/?lang=en
Review...............................http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXtfCe630p0
This is bang up to date physics wise but still running on the gMotor2 engine (I think) at the extortionate price of £17
Graphics are fine and the mod community are rapidly adding tracks, cars et al...........
In the future, and when I have a chance to build or buy a more up to date PC, access to the more current titles can be had for much pikeyness but there is no doubting the experience of even the older titles is far superior to consoles.
This isn't meant for the converted but if you play consoles and have a wheel you should try PC sims..........outstanding improvement IMHO.

Re: Gran Tourismo 6
I was simming on PC/computer long before I got a console. Right back to Revs on the BBC Micro...
Problem being that PC sims these days are so set up for online racing that they very often don't bother much with a proper offline game element. I love rFactor, have chucked many hours at it (and it's offspring like GTR, etc) but the current batch of stuff is leaving me cold. Superb driving fidelity, not that much playability. That's what drags me back to things like GT on the Playstation. Fire it up and get in a good race within 5 minutes - which progresses you in the 'game' element of it.
I'd agree with you partially though - if you have a PC that can play them smoothly (and most should have - they are old) that selection of ISI based sims (plus RBR) you've bought represent what I think was the peak of offline PC racing. The current cutting edge stuff like iRacing and rFactor 2 is fantastically realistic and drivable, but only really when you go online - which ties you to specific playing times, unless you fancy braving the wild-west of open servers <shudder>.
