Wireless Printer Help required - GEEKS?

Post by H8OAG » Sun Dec 29, 2013 4:39 pm

Have tried to connect an HP Photosmart 5520 to my Macbook Air without success.
The Mac cannot detect the printer wirelessly (ok on usb)
The printer shows it is connected to the home network but shows a different ip address to the router
xxx.xxx.1.81 for the router .......xxx.xxx.1.83 for the printer

How do I resolve?

:cheers

Everything on the network should have its own ip.

Subnet should be the same 255.255.255.0
DNS should be the routers ip
It should setup automatically.
Or it could be Apple machines don't like working with anything apple didn't make.

Dot not know anything about macs, diagnostics are universal though.

Can you browse to the printer http://xxx.xxx.1.83 ?
Can you ping the printer from the router? Browse to the router xxx.xxx.1.81 login, probably the diagnostics page, then ping option enter the printer IP.
Your printer supports Airprint, can you print from your Iphone/pad?

Printer networking as BN mentioned should be

IP:192.168.1.89
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

It should pick all this up from DHCP though just as your devices do.

If no luck connect via USB then try firmware updating the printer?

Failed!
Can neither browse printer or router
It is the standard BT Home Hub 3 offering ......now that the O2 one has returned to its maker

Are you sure 81 is the router? Will more than likely end in 1 or 254 if it is still on default settings.

Can you do a

Applications > Utilities > Terminal, opened the terminal, and typed "ifconfig -a" into the terminal

And paste the output. Don't worry about masking it as it is all internal and does not compromise your security.

I forget the programme that sometimes causes issues with my MBPr, think it is called Bonjour. It only happens now and again but requires a reboot of the router. I imagine you've already tried this though....

Command not found Sanj after typing ifconfig hyphen a

David - I am beginning to suspect the Router

Other devices cannot detect the printer .....and Gail's iPad is seeing another wireless network connection (subnet?) appeared

Well Done David!
A complete reboot of the crappy BT router and "Bonjour wakes up" and printer /airprint is now working

Thanks also to Sanj and the others.........Apple were wanting me to sign up for One to One tuition at £79

I like it when this little network provides solutions......not problems

Did exactly the same one morning at work, I work with two techies/developers and it had them stumped... A quick google pointed out Bonjour freezing which is solved by a quick router reboot!

Glad to be able to help!

BTW, that useless BT home hub will create three wireless networks - your private one plus BTWIFI and BTWIFI-with-FON. If you connect to either of those two you will be able to connect to the internet but not to your printer. Personally I would preempt a whole load of grief jettison the BT router ASAP. The BTWIFI stuff is pervasive and evil.

Cheers,
Robin
