Sadly the fee has still to be paid

Makes sense and does give the option to pay monthly in the future ( although 5% more to do so)

Unless they can improve their computer systems I'd be against this - I've had the pressure of 30 mins in the back of a police car because computer said I wasn't insured. Plus the 5% extra for something that'll presumably save them money is a joke.

I've had that pleasure as well, twice. Once was when I was driving the wife's car and the took her into the back of the police car to sort out if I was insured or not, despite me telling them I was insured under my own policy. Although, the insurance data base relies on the insurance company imputing the data in a timely fashion which they hadn't done in our case both times. I would a have thought the tax disc system would be automatic at point of payment.

Tax computer system is not the same as insurance database.

The tax computer system works, on the whole (some issues with SORN when introduced but better now).

The 5% covers the interest on the money they borrow because you don't pay in advance and also the cost of doing 12 transactions instead of 1 or 2.

At present you pay 10% more to buy tax in two instalments instead of one, so the 5% to pay monthly is good. Also you can then easily tax your Elise for the months you use it without bothering to reclaim the road tax for those 4 months it is not on the road.

For the first year or two it might make sense to print out the online receipt/reference number and keep it in the car, just to avoid trying to find all that on your smartphone at 2am in the back of the police car :-)

Cheers,
Robin

Maybe Im wrong but I think there is confusion with the pay monthly thing - I read it as you can get road tax for 6 months or 12 but you now have the option to spread that cost monthly ( for +5%) - they arent offering monthly tax so you still need to fill out SORN declaration etc.if you are taking the car off the road and if you try to do that on say 2nd of the month you will still need to pay that months tax :?

Shame - would make sense to allow people to buy it monthly.

Totally agree but I suspect they'll cite admin costs as a reason for not doing so...

Not particularly plausible, though, is it ... it would be nice to say "you can buy 6 months and then provide a months notice to cancel", for example ... still the majority just buy all year every year, so maybe not enough of an issue for anyone to bother their arse about it.

Robin

If they provided the ability to confirm that your details were correct via the web then fair enough. The makers of tax disc holders can't be happy.

I want my tax disc with £0 on it on my windscreen where I can see it, to remind me how ill I am. :D

ps:- you are only allowed one car to be exempt from tax, and that should have been the Motability car, but N3 somehow went under the radar. As the Insignia has now gone back I will be able to tax the Honda CRV for free in its place. Every little helps.

I do not have to pay road tax on my car, ie N3 due to the range of allowances that I get from my disability War Pension, which is why I also qualify for a Blue Badge and free public transport.

However as I was also provided with a Motability car which is £0 tax, I should not have continued to get N3 for free, but it has disabled on the V5 which is what the PO look at when I go to renew, so that is just a bonus. As I have now sent the Motability car back and replaced it with the Honda that I bought, that will now qualify for exemption from payment.
