51 in a 30....place your bets now

Post by DDtB » Fri Nov 08, 2013 1:05 pm

A friend at work has received an invitation to court for doing 51 in a 30.

Road is the one leaving fort William heading north... Not long after the BP on the left.

Dry and clear Conditions. Traffic marked as heavy on the citation.

She's worrying about massive fines and a ban. Any thoughts on what's likely to be handed down??

Cheers

Dave

I got 5pts and a fine of about £300 for 58 in a 30, but that was in the dim and distant past so not sure whether there is any relevance nowadays.

(In my defence... errr.... (all the usual stuff) :)

depending on the judge, if she can suck a golf ball through a hose, she "may" be ok

I got similar for 52 in a 30 around five years ago.

5pts and £250.

Surely the argument is there for the traffic being sufficiently light to achieve and maintain 51mph.

Really does depend on the judge though.

I'll say 3pts and £250 fine

A mate at work is waiting on something similar- got clocked doing 57mph in a 30 (on the way to the dealership to pick up his new car!).

I'll let you know when he hears (it's been about a month now since he was caught).

I would guess at up to 6 points and a big( £200/300) fine, or maybe a 28 day or shorter ban.

It won't be 3pts, 5pts and a reasonably hefty fine in the hundreds is the likeliest.

4 points and 200 fine. You've got to be 30 over the limit or very unlucky to get a ban. I'd also just plead guilty by groveling letter rather than turning up to court

An ex-colleague got stopped doing 58 in a 30 past a school with her two young kids on board, on a Sunday morning.

Tears and genuine remorse got her a stern warning

It is ridiculous that she got off with that.

Twice the limit in a 30 should have got her a three month ban.

If you were in sight of the go faster stripe, and on the way out and not into Fort William, it may make a difference.
Plus agree with what other guy said, traffic can't have been that heavy if you were doing 51. Might get a 'going with the flow of traffic' type defence ?
Depends on if there are any turn offs that could intorduce other vehicles into your path or not as to whether it can be classes as careless of dangerous.
If there aren't any turn offs, i'd use that as a mitigating factor in your exuberance.
