Cheap Shoguns or L200s - speak to me... (NLC)

Post by Shug » Wed Oct 23, 2013 1:43 pm

Talking proper shed cheap. Under £3K, edging as close to 2 as possible, cheap.

We're moving (finally) somewhere more rural, which has a road in that's liable to flood in some of the really sh*t weather we've had over the past couple of winters. Elaine had an issue last winter where she thought she had had it, nearly getting stuck in a flood in her work Astra. Proper scared her - so we're looking for something cheap as chips with high ground clearance to use for dragging stuff about and a commuter when the weather is proper shaky. Economy won't matter as it won't be a daily driver, just to be used for shifting loads, emergency access and a short commute in filthy weather. Also don't mind it having a workhorse interior and battle scars will just make me even less precious about it.

I keep coming back to leggy Mitsis, either of the Shogun or L200 flavour. Speak to me folks - and please bear in mind that budget - if I hear any chat of intergalactic mile Landies that I'd have to rip the engine out of every fortnight, it'll get ignored

Brother -in -Law had one as a work hack, just like a Landie but with more comfort, more reliability and equal ability.
Downside ( also like a Landie) they are not a good place to be in a crash :blackeye

Yeah, sadly aware of that. The idea is that being up tall will give better primary safety, in that she's less likely to hit something or have something hit her...

Aware I can't tick all the boxes at this money though.

Slightly less gyppo-esque suggestion; 5dr Shogun Pinin? Seems to get a decent writeup from a 2 minute google... A mates dad bought one a few winters ago for occasional use but I think ended up using it more than the M5.

Not a bad suggestion at all JJ, but are they not a bit less space for general sh*te haulage (which is one of the reasons for it) than the others? Will take a serious look though.

I have no desire to look like I'm coming to quote for a driveway, just the way the searches have gone so far :D

For wading through floods, I would suggest, (if you get a min) research the wading depths of your options. I know of at least one 4x4 owner who killed their engine going through a flood they thought they could manage.

Alternatively, you can prob get a snorkel and some high exit engine breathers for not a lot of coin for most 4x4s. :thumbsup

As for L200s, you know my family's experience of the first gen. :blackeye

I've had a few 4x4's as company vehicles in Oman and Australia, also had my own in Oz.

The pick ups are handy for chucking sh*t in the back of but no security and terrible ride, so I'd go for the Shogun every time.

I had an old Nissan Patrol GQ in Oz, it was a fantastic machine, bulletproof in the extreme, worth a look if you can find one here, just like this one http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... ?logcode=p

It'll go forever and go just about anywhere.

Grand Cherokee may be a decent shout - maybe even a V8 as they will be cheap, (and we know how Shug can't resist a V8). Mr Boag seemed to rate his Jeep, IIRC.

Added bonus has LPG conversion - I know mpg is not a big concern. Get that, a tow bar and a trailer (as the boot may well be full of LPG kit) and you are sorted! :thumbsup

Okay, was trying to be helpful, and then came across these two that have Shug written all over them....

I know, slightly over budget, but....

I like your thinking, but we've discounted LPG'd V8s, as theres no LPG for sale where we're going - we'd have to travel to Irvine, or Kirkudbright... Petrol probably just taking it too far for MPG - it's not vitally important, but we get 22mpg out of the Audi, we'd aim for really no worse than that in Diesel for the mud-plugger if we're not to get really p*ssed off with fuelling it...

Thanks all, so far. Some good stuff in those searches. :thumbsup
