Royal Mail shares.

Post by tut » Fri Oct 11, 2013 9:59 am

Did anybody apply for them?

Tried for £10K worth and received none. Would have been a £3,200 overnight profit. They could have pointed that out beforehand and I would have got my friendly postman to buy them for me.

:thumbsup Applied for & got the minimum £750
Think it was a decision after the applications were in and they were clearly over subscribed to impose the zero shares for over £10k :blackeye
They cant be traded until 21st so who knows where price will end up.

Are you selling them straight off?

The reason that I went in for the max was due to the Facebook shares. I was not prepared to take the gamble when they went public at $38, but seriously thought about it when they dropped to $20, but again did not take the chance.

Now they are $50.

Would be no CGT on that gain as it is within his personal CGT-free allowance of (very approx) 10K. Even if you have twice that in gain, assuming you're married and the other half has no personal gains, you can transfer 50% asset pre-sale to spouse (tax free transfers between spouses) and then you each allocate your full CGT-free allowance against your half of the gain.

Long story short, married couples can get 20K of tax-free gains in each and every tax year, and most people fail to exploit this.

Cheers,
Robin

That brings me onto something that I just became aware of, married couples tax allowance. Seems that as pensioners, any amount of Verian's tax allowance that she does not use, which is almost half, can be passed over to me as a tax payer. This works out as a min of £750 and a max of £3,200 per annum, and I could back claim it to when Verian was 60.

Called up HMRC to gets lots of money from them only to learn that although we qualified in all other respects, I had to be born before 1935.

Tut, surely at least one of your identities was born before 1935?

Cheers,
Robin

P.S. You should vote for call-me-dave - he's going to give you the married couples tax allowance back because marriage is an institution we should encourage and protect

3.2 BN valuation (appears to be on track) then it will be in the FTSE 100 , large scale investors will then be looking for a slice.
