alloy wheels

Post by cypruselise » Wed Aug 07, 2013 4:45 pm

Hi, does anyone know the correct colour code for a series 1 Elise alloy wheels please? Also any suggestions as to who could refurb these alloy wheels. The main prob as I see it is that it is not an easy car to stick on four axle stands so as to take off all wheels at once. Bruce.

Give us your location Bruce, (if its Cyprus you might struggle for a recommendation close to you)
You would be better off borrowing a 2nd set of alloys off someone if you can

If you jack it up as normal on one side, remove the road wheels, put the axle stands underneath the lower balljoint front and back with a bit of wood between the stand and the ball joint then you can (carefully!) jack up the other side and repeat.

If you're near Edinburgh then I've used these guys twice, once on the S2 Oz wheels and once on my Toyota. You can get them to select the closest finish they have to your wheels, though I wouldn't expect it to be exactly the same:

If you want better match than that, you could call the factory and ask them if they know the colour code?

Cheers,

I've used Chameleon in Glasgow http://www.chameleonmetalcoatings.co.uk/ for alloys and some S1 grilles and I thought they did a great job

Thanks for your help folks, I live in east Lothian and also have an 1990 Excel which also needs some work to the wheels but I think that they will be much more difficult as they are OZ wheels and very much bespoke.

Recently got mine done at The Wheel Specialist in East Kilbride. Did a good job and would be happy to use them again.

I have mine booked in there for next week, after reading some old posts on here. Not as cheap as I was hoping, but it has been some years since I last had wheels refurbed so my expectation may be unrealistic. Online quote was £330 but they reduced it to £250 over the phone which is me driving the car in, and picking up at end of day. Discussed jacking with them and they said were aware as they've done a few Elises so should be OK.

I took my wheels in as I had winter rims on the car. They did help me out when the winters wouldn't come off and sorted it for me and seemed to know what to do and searched out the jacking points ( under my watchful eye) :thumbsup

Sorry, cant help with the wheels question but I do see a white Excel in NB quite often parked near the golf club. Assume that's yours.

Just to update this thread in case anyone is searching...

I've just had two sets of wheels (VX OEM and civic winters) refurbished by Chameleon Metal Coatings in Rutherglen.

Tried in vain to book into the Wheel Specialist but after my 5th unreturned call i decided someone else should get my business. Chameleon quoted £180 for the same day service and £160 for loose wheels. Even better than that I got my new tyres delivered there and they fitted them for nowt and disposed of my old set. When the Wheel Specialist eventually called back they wanted £255 for the VX and £230 for the loose wheels...so a full £145 more...umm no thanks.

The VX wheels were really really bad and the previous refurb was flaking off in chunks. They warned me they might not be perfect and sure enough there are a couple of bits where they struggled to get them completed back to standard, but to be honest for the price they are not bad at all. All you can see is a couple of slight lumps around one of the valves and on one of the spokes. DDtD and Dom have both seen them and agreed it's not obvious unless you are really looking for it. I'm sure a more expensive acid bath or similar would eventually get them better...but at a cost. Civic wheels were in much better condition and they have come back perfectly. It's not a pot plant and cappuccino type place but the guys are all sound and real car enthusiasts. Wheels are perfectly balanced and even came with the correct tyre pressure front and back.

Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Just to let you all know that I took my elise wheels (two at a time) to Pentland and they did a great job for about £190.00. The wheels were also perfectly balanced. A good job all round - with a smile as well!
