Next car dilema....

Post by mwmackenzie » Tue Aug 06, 2013 9:45 am

My dilema is I've sold my Golf (for spares/repair) and my MR2 so need a car, I don't know what to get lol Prob budget about £3.5Kish as I don't really want to take on any finance.

Looking for some thoughts on this

the cars of interest are

1) VW Passat B6 140 TDi Sport, full history and in Jobbie brown, rare and my fave colour for them lol, it is leggy at 140K but cheap, had had a power of work done (£3k worth) and has a new mot, mot advisory on oil leak from intercooler, spoke to a VW tech who said this is heehaw to worry about.. (abz)

Will be decent on fuel and a decent family bus as I commute 50 miles a day and every 2nd weekend I drop the boys off 170mile round trip so I will be racking up the miles...

2) Audi TT 225 91k miles full history, MOT December same colour as my A4 and same wheels and will have a matching plate if I get it so will look cool outside the house lol, concern is the MPG and the fact the specialist I spoke to a while back about these said can you need deep pockets to maintain them?? Tut will prob be the man to talk to about this ;) I'm swithering as I only need occassional back seats as we have the A4 too but is it a money pit?? ... (Weege)

3) BMW 320 d M-Sport.... I like a lot but seem incredibly expensive even for leggie ones? one with 140-150K still fetching £4-5K  (down sarf generally)

4) your suggestions... Sold the MR2 as I could have done with an occassional back seat....

I can handle 30+MPG but lower will start to piss me off I think, the passat should be good for 50mpg but is a tad sensible family car but I like them. The TT is one that's been on my to do list but not sure about the running cost/fun factor, my MR2 and all the Lotus's I've had in the past were fun, i'm going for a drive cars and my worry is that the TT wont be, might talk to Stu about this.. If i'm losing the fun factor all together am I best just to go sensible and go Diesel Passat and save some cash on the price of the car and the running cost, tax fuel etc...?

Confused I am! lol

Going to se one tonight just haven't decided which... may go seethe weegie TT and if no good see if Clarkie or Scotty can check out the passat..

Your thoughts please

You know a TT is just a Golf/A3 in drag right? Elaine had that 225 engine in an S3 and got 25-27ish MPG. Coil packs were the only thing I remember about them being flaky, but they finally revised those so they didn't die all the time, IIRC.

To drive, I guess it'd be a lot like the S3 - numb steering, way too jiggly ride, but it was fun from mid-corner to exit as the turbo spooled up and fired you out. Problem is, that was it's only trick.

I dont know much about any of your options but at a guess I would expect a TT with 91k has money pit written all over it :?

Yeah mate, but drag is good, no? lol It's maybe a trick more than a diesel passat lol... I'm not looking for anything comparitive to my old Lotus's driving dynamics, just something that will be nice to drive, comfy and look decent, a commuter waggon really but it doesn't need to be famil sized  25-27mpg might be a pain in the arse with my mileage as I also did 390 miles with work last month on top of my usual....

From what you have said, forget the BM, as you say, for your price range, too leggy.

So Passat or TT. Two very different packages. I guess you need to decide if you want practical and economical or not. As you already have the A4, then the TT seems like a good car to compliment it. I would think with some well researched resources the maintenance would not be too bad. Just comes down to the MPG. I know I got sick of how much fuel I was putting into my Golf GTI. How much mileage are you doing? Mostly motorway, town or country driving? Depending on you usage, the diesel may not save that much, given the higher cost of it. Only if you are doing a lot of motorway driving will you notice a significant MPG difference.... IMHO

At my price range that's a low miler lol and it's 50k less than the passat :( just not much choice in budget that isn't a boggo fiesta or corsa (not an option) lol

Forget the TT.

I would forget the Passat too, incidentally - surely you should buy whatever the Skoda near-equivalent is for less money?

Cheers,

Hyundi is not really me ex sis in law had a V6 when they first came out, I drove it a bit and kinda liked it but it needed more noise so I think I'd be wanting a V6 and fuel eccon out the window then... I like the megane although the only black one close to budget has 77k on it, that orange one seems a bargain.....

Clarkie if I was going M3 I'd be going E46 and getting finance... but then high tax, 18mpg and finance doesn't make it so viable, but again it is on my must have list, maybe when I'm working closer to home :?
