TT 2014

Post by Jeremy » Tue Jul 30, 2013 4:02 pm

Good afternoon,

An old friend who lives in San Francisco is talking about coming over to go to the TT next year and asked if I wanted to tag along. I've always fancied doing the TT but don't know the first thing about it in terms of the best day to go, where to stay, ferries, best vantage points (grandstand ? Field ?).

I've had a search online for a 'TT for Dummies beginners guide' but can't find anything which gives me it in a nutshell.

Anyone who has been care to offer me any pearls of wisdom, do's or don'ts ?

Regards,

Jeremy

Book now, if you can.

The TT site ( www.iomtt.com ) is excellent. Masses of info, forums and the like to help you plan your trip.

Shug is right Jeremy - you need to book ASAP as it is always oversubscribed - don't hang about as you're pretty late.

We tried to book the ferry for a car when we were leaving this year and couldn't get our preferred dates, so now is too late for the good dates although you'll get some availability. Some also free up again in March when folk who have booked with £40 don't pay the rest and their spaces become available.

Places to spectate........

I try and get to somewhere different every year but also return to my favourites too. We stay just south of Peel so tend to stick to the viewpoints from Greeba to Kirk Michael with the odd trip to the mountain and Ballaugh Bridge.

I try and stay away from the very busy sections as there are plenty of other places to go that hardly has anyone there. Cronk-y-voddy straight just as they rise out of Glen Helen is always a good bit if you don't mind a small walk. Harold's wall just before ballacraine is another great spot if a bit busier.

Try and get enough of a visit to actually see some races. Weather can close in for a couple of days and so there is no racing, if you can get at least 3 days you should see some.

For places to stay, homestay is probably the best value and there is usually some availability although most people will want you to book for a week as they may not fill a day here or there. Or there are plenty of camping places too. They also have those containers that they turn into rooms at the grandstand. The IOMTT website as has been mentioned is your best bet. :thumbsup

Thanks Big D that's the kind of info I am looking for. It's all out there already I guess but I'm just being lazy and was looking for the condensed version of what is good and what isnt.

Hoping to get the ferry booked asap once I've lined up some accomodation options.

I take it tickets are required for the grandstands but the other areas are just free access, is that correct ?

I've just booked for 2015 :-)

Saba Glen Yurts booked up for 12 of us, can only book the ferry a year in advance so reminder set in diary, can't wait!

Imagine the Yurt's will be booked for next year but if not look pretty smart and £140 per person for 3 nights during the practice week..
