Should we sell?
After getting the Boxster Spyder, we are not using the 911 (964) Targa that much and was wondering about people's opinions as to whether its worth keeping a car in the garage that is not depreciating (ever so slightly appreciating) but still takes some effort (both financial and some time) to keep things ticking over.
Over the last 2 1/2 years since we have had it, we have probably ploughed in more than £5K + (easily) into the vehicle to get it up to a good standard (obviously money that we will not get back). The insurance is not an issue as its approx £250 through Admiral multi-car policy.
Little bit unsure as to whether to sell it now, sell it next year or sell it when Sandra's company car is due for renewal (Sep 2014).
The added benefit that I do have keeping it, is that it keeps the mileage off the Spyder when we have to got to different work locations.
Thoughts from the S.E massive who sometime speak sense? As torn in many different directions on the car.

I would be using the Spyder to keep the miles off the Targa. Lovely car

I've never seen your 964 but if it's a good'un I'd be interested in a p/x for my 996 C4S?

Thanks for the offer but we would probably be looking to go down to 2 cars instead of having another vehicle. Would have possibly been interested but once Sandra's Clio goes then its sensible car time for the dog and don't think the C4S would fit the bill

When Harry Metcalfe sold his Zonda, he carried out some weird and wonderful calculation to demonstrate how much it cost him to keep, even tho it was appreciating.

Owning a car to keep the miles off another car sounds like madness to me. Only time that makes sense to me is if you're talking about irreplaceable classics.
Re: Should we sell?
Depends if you need the money.
Money in a slowly depreciating car sounds a bit more fun than the same money in the bank being slowly eroded by inflation.

Re: Should we sell?
If it's not costing much to keep i'd suggest holding onto it for another year.
The recession is (apparently) showing signs of finally bottoming out, which means by next year hopefully there will be more people with available funds.
Which means you'll get an easier sale, or more cash for it.
If the recession hasn't bottomed out by then, then it wont matter as we will all be unemployed and raking through bins to find food, so you wont care about the car.

I think the logic was along the lines of "if i invested the money what else could it get me".rossybee wrote:AKA Man MathsGregR wrote:When Harry Metcalfe sold his Zonda, he carried out some weird and wonderful calculation to demonstrate how much it cost him to keep, even tho it was appreciating.
He basically offset the appreciation against the running costs and the cost of having the money "tied up" in the car.
Unless I'm stoopid and i completely missed the point

Re: Should we sell?
Might be worth keeping.
I bought my 964 in 2010 for £11k
Sold it in 2012 for £10.5k
It's just been sold for £13k as a classified ad on Pistonheads (obviously there might have been some haggling).
So they seem to be on the up.

Re: Should we sell?
Guys,
Thanks for all the replies.
The car is in Motortune next week for its service and get a couple of things sorted out. After the service is done then we may have a further think about what we want to do.
Would be sad to see it go but with the pace of the Spyder I see us using it less and less. If the 964 was a coupe then it would be a different story. We ended up getting the Targa as we wanted some open top motoring when we had the Evora, now having the Spyder we have pretty similar vehicles.
Just wish Sandra liked the looks of the 968 as we could have changed for a CS.

I seem to remember you posting a picture at one time....looked gorgeous.
I foresee that if you put it up I'd spend time in anguish over whether to buy it or not....

or alternatively my 4 days spent detailing the car:

Which I must admit need to be done again this year to get it looking good after the bodywork has been done.
