Well folks,
I had the chance to sit in a Vauxhall VX220 which I believe is identical to the Elise in terms of interior dimensions. Very sad to say that at 6 foot 3 (34inch inseem) I simply couldn't get comfortable. Leg and knee room was fine but sitting up straight wasn't an option and slouching soon gave me back ache after a few minutes.
So the dilemma returns...having enjoyed the Boxster but keen to try something different but still with that something 'special' what do I go for?
Any suggestions welcome (keep it sensible

)
A (very) gutted

Try an S2 with Probax seats (post-2007 or thereabouts?), or indeed any car which has been retro-fitted with Probax seats. Comfort was night'n'day over the older seats for me.

The seating position is a little unusual at first, but I reckon you'd soon get used to it. Also worth altering the lumbar pump as I reckon it makes a fair bit of difference if your lack of comfort was in the lower back.
I feel uncomfy hopping out of my Alfa 159 and into the Elise, and I've owned the Elise for 6 years, but it soon passes.

Same here. The rollbar cover on S2/VX is head-crackingly close to the top of the seat. Wouldn't risk it. S1 Elise is, for some reason, better.
Try an S1.

martin,
I am roughly the same dimensions as you, and have never had an issue with comfort in any of the 6 Elise variants I have owned over the years, and covering some fairly long distances on European trips etc.
maybe the VX seats are bulkier that the Lotus ones?
Caterhams however are a problem for people of our size!

Does your budget stretch to an Evora?
EDIT: seconds ahead of Justin

Not until I'm a Head Teacher lol
Pretty gutted in all honesty guys - just looking through Pistonheads just now and nothing floats my boat. There are loads of Boxsters but I've been there and would rather try something different - there's just nothing that tickles my fancy within my budget! I'll keep looking - everything happens for a reason!

Man up and get used to it. Don't listen to Graeme he's about 6'7 FFS.

6 feet 6 is the technical limit, over this your crash helmet would be above the roll hoop
VX seats bulkier then the rest, and engine bulkhead a different shape
Sit in a post MY06 car with Probax seats (ideally Sport pack not Touring); you'll have an extra 2 inches (ish) but check you can comfortably select 5th gear with foot off the clutch
