best helmet and Hans for the 211??

Post by Stu160 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 10:11 pm

Any thoughts??

I am still using karting Arai, but its very noisy at high speeds, and not sure of its properties at 100+Mph. also thinking a Hans device may not be a bad idea.

Cheers

best helmet and Hans for the 211??

Post by Scottish Scrutineer » Tue Jun 25, 2013 10:45 pm

Go for a helmet that fits suggly and is comfortable on your head. Make sure it is at least Snell SA 2010 or FIA 8860 approved and HANS compatible (FIA 8858). Consider the weight of the helmet as well, Stilo helmets have always seemed lighter, but are more often used in closed cars. Ideally try a few different helmet manufacturers products to get one that fits well. Unfortunately, there's not many places that stock a big range up here. It may be worth visiting GPR or Demon Tweaks if you have the excuse.

Have a look at http://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/ ... 2007_0.pdf for more info on HANS devices and installation. The belts need to run within a particular line to be effective. Make sure it is the correct angle for the inclination of your seat as well.

As you have the proper hans seats and harnesses it would make sense.

If you arai fits then just buy another with the hans posts.

All depends on budget.

I forgot to say try Joe Tanner at Knockhill for helmets. He stocks Bell, but I think can get Arai.
http://www.rennatdesign.com/index.html is his website. His custom paint jobs are really good if you want something special.

Welcome to try mine Stu. Arai helmet too.

Seat is very important as it needs room for the hans but as Scotty says you have it.

I'm sure I've seen retro fit hans fixing points for helmets. Certainly at the budget end of solution but another option.. Doesn't help with the justification for a shiny new lid though....;-)

Pretty sure, though, that they will be only for helmets that would have had a HANS option in the first place. I'd doubt you could take an old standard helmet and retro-fit these, if the shell hasn't been designed for the force?

Just thinking out loud here, not saying that's 100% fact, but as I understood it, HANS posts need to be used on a shell created for handle the stress. Or certainly, that was the case when they first came out.

Im with Shug on this one - My hemet is pre-drilled, but I didn't spec it with the posts, so it comes with blanking plugs over the holes that are easily removed and posts screwed in,

however, I think I have seen these HANS 'retrofit' kits, that are supposed to be able to be used on any old helmet - cant see how it would ever be safe / work effectively if needed,

I could be wrong though - Renny might be able to answer this one though from a scruitineer point of view though?

best helmet and Hans for the 211??

Post by Scottish Scrutineer » Fri Jun 28, 2013 6:18 am

As far as I recall, you can retro-fit to a helmet that is pre drilled. I wouldn't go trying to fit to one that had no holes. The shell may not be strong enough as restrain the head and could result in more damage.
As Stu has a bike helmet, it won't have mounting holes and won't be reinforced for the loads.

Its an Arai kart helmet. In one way its good as it has a thick visor, and i am sure it will be a very similar construction to a car one.
I do also wear a kart neck brace, have done for years, however, the hans must be better.

Stu

I bought a hans helmet and fitted the posts myself. If you want a loan of my hans give me a shout and I can send it down.

Cheers
