Seems odd that they are trying to deport him for spoiling the Boat Race unless he has previous ? He is also married to a Brit so could prove tricky. Unlikely to get to Abu Qatada levels of Legal Aid Bills but expect to see 1 or 2 appeals.

Saw this the other day and was suprised, Yes he may be a bit of a fud but he is married to a UK citizen and they are expecting a child. I understand he upset some posh people but he got 6 months in prison for his trouble.
If he had jumped into lock lomond and upset the bobarth dragon boat race would he have been jailed or deported ? wasn't there something not to long ago about serious criminals who should have been deported but nobody bothered?
I think splitting up his family could be against his human right to have a family life

Hold on a minute ...

...
I read that he has "
been refused leave to remain in the UK".
So, my interpretation is that he's an Australian national living in the UK on some visa of finite length. As a result of him being an idiot, the UK authorities have decided not to stamp his visa for an extension.
Where's the "
deporting" bit? ... and the leap to comparisons with Abu Qatada is bewildering ...
It's a non story ...
- Aussie comes to Britain.
- Aussie acts like a dick.
- Aussie doesn't get to stay.
That's all ... or am I missing an important bit?
Cheers,
Eric

If we did that to every Australian who acted like a dick, we would have nobody to serve us in pubs.

Correct, he is not being deported.
In the past simply being married to a British national might have been enough to earn him the right to stay (ignoring the criminal conviction).
Today British nationals can only bring in married non-EU partners _if_ the British citizen has a job and earns more than 18,000/year. Here's an article on why that didn't turn out the way we hoped:

Anyway, just shows there is no guarantee. Marriage is sacred, according to Mr Cameron, but taxes are more sacred
Cheers,
Robin

"In his hearing at Isleworth Crown Court, Mr Oldfield said his actions were a protest against elitism and inequality."
He got exactly what he wanted then, now he does not have to live with it.
