It came up in conversation when having my bike MOT on Friday. A gent I was chatting to in his late fiftys had sat his test in the early 80s and had been riding bikes for years then packed it in. He decided a few months ago to rekindle the bike bug and thought nothing more than popping down to his local bike shop pay a large amount for a new bike and enjoy the summer.

He was going his paper work insurance etc only to descover his full bike catagory gone from his licance  it would appear that when he was done for speeding some years ago his licance was then altered, on return of his licance he never thought to check the catagorys on the plus side they added a PSV and a HGV to his licence which he never sat

He now having to resit the whole bike test as there is nothing to prove he sat a test in the first place , then I spoke to someone else in Melrose on Saterday that had also lost there bike catagory and also having to resit

I bet you have a quick look

Heard of this a few times, absolutely ridiculous... can't believe they don't have an archived db or something they can check.

Mcn did quite a bit about this topic, mainly as it was affecting bikers.
First came to light when guy got refused insurance, dispite having full no claims bonus, having submitted his licence every year when applying. They said there was no record of him ever having a bike licence.
I'm sure another follow up story was a guy getting stopped and charged with no licence.
By the time most people noticed it, it was too late.
Some have got it back, but very few. (and a lot more than you think were affected)
I know it's not much help, but seeing as it was a big story for motorcycle news, he could try contacting them to see if they can help, or offer advice ?
