When I first got the Scooby no one would insure it unless it had a Tracker fitted, now fast forward a few years and the Tracker and insurance renewal are due, so I had a play with one of the online insurance configurators and its actually £40 cheaper to insure the car without the Traker fitted, so I've now cancelled the Tracker and saved another £150 on top of that. Go figure that one out

Insurance never makes any sense to me.
In an attempt to cut costs on one of our older taxis we asked the insurance company to quote for TPF&T, it was over a grand more than fully comp
If anyone can explain to me how that works or why not having a tracker is cheaper than having one I'd love to hear it

It's all done on statistics.
Of all the scoobies that have had claims, more will have had trackers fitted (most probably because the insurance company asked for it) and therefore in the world of insurance, if you have a tracker fitted you are more likely to claim.
It's the same as if your car is garaged or not. A lot of the VX boys are finding that their insurance is cheaper if they say it sits out on the street. percentage wise hardly any are kept on the street and therefore the statistics show that VX220's that are kept on the street are a lot less likely to claim making it cheaper.
I think statistics are fine, but a little bit of common sense needs to be applied.

I guess it depends on how you view the risk of your Scooby being stolen as it's much more likely to be recovered if it still has it's tracker. If it's not recovered then any potential savings in premiums will likely be wiped out when renewal time comes around. Well rightly or wrongly my thinking is I wouldn't really want the car back if it's been stolen and probably thrashed and smashed by some toe rag. The garage one is a strange one I could have saved another £35 by saying the car was parked overnight on the drive, but as its garaged that's what I declared. I guess maybe they got a lot of claims for damage caused to cars parked in garages, a mates garage shelve collapsed and dumped the contents onto the bonnet of his Porsche, this ended up in an insurance claim, I suspect an incident like this wouldn't be uncommon.

My logic behind getting a tracker would be that the car would be recovered before the scroats had a chance to trash or crash it so hopefully returned in good condition. There is always the chance that without a tracker it is recovered damaged but not written off so you are left with the car and the prospect of having to get it repaired. I guess like most things you take your chances in life so here's hoping this doesn't come back to bite you. Well in my experience that is a falicy as well.
Those tw@ts still get you on 'risk'. I had an own fault claim a few years back and like you thought as both my cars are on Protected No Claims bonuses and at about 15+ years as well we will be okay. Quotes come in and up by £200 or something.

"Well you still have yourmaximum No-Claims sir, but you are now higher risk so the basic policy is now much higher so even with the Protection it has jumped. You should see what it would have jumped if you hadn't been!" Marvellous!
Of course the other car renewal comes up 3 months later and even although it wasn't that policy or company that the claim was on, and I am not even down as Main Driver, it also jumped significantly as well. It is also a high group car. They get you every way you turn.
I think I rather still pay a little more and keep my Tracker on the Evora than have some spotty yoof thrash it. It also has to be kept in the garage anyway. It is a Lotus, so it leaks.........

Fitting a tracker is based on the replacement cost of the car. Currently if your car is 40k value and above then you have to have tracker, It used to be 25k and above. Both the Evora and RRS had to have one fitted to get insurance but the Elise valued at 20k doesn't all are kept outside.
I guess if they recover a car and it needs work to get it back to pristine condition it's cheaper to write off a car at that price point than repair, statistics again.

my BMW has a tracker fitted but it's to expensive to warrent having it switched on. I think it was something like £150 to have it changed over to me but I think it saved £10 a year on my insurance.

Annually they are quite expensive, we did the lifetime subscription but that only works if you keep the car longer than 2 and a bit years.

The reason cars in drives or in garages are getting dearer is due to carjacking when they break into your house and steal the keys.
If it is on the street, they don't know who's house to break into to steal the keys.
Another way to lower the premium is to add an oldie to it, even if they will never use the car. Still get the insurance in your own name, but by adding a more resposible driver to the policy you are less of a risk.
Most companies charge more for third party now than their fully comp - I think this has to with drink drivers, banned drivers, and very high risk drivers being the ones that have to opt for third party cover - insurance companies wont give them fully comp.
This year I was cheaper getting two different insurers than getting a multicar policy.

I haven't activated the tracker on the Ferrari either. The cost of the subscription was more than the reduction in insurance and with Aviva, the current insurer, it made no difference anyhow.
