Re: Thatcher dead
I had a lot of time for her during her period as PM, which probably affected me more than most of you, on account of me being an old git. Most of my Service friends felt the same way, especially those that were involved in the Falklands War. She took no prisoners and was strong enough to mix it with, and take on, any of the world leaders, especially the French and the Brussels attempt to dictate how we ran our Country. She was also instrumental in ending the Cold War along with Reagan and Khrushchev.
I flew her around Scotland for several days in 1990, when she was campaigning for John Major in the General Election, which he won. I was flying her to Inverness airport one day when I was forced to land in a field by a farmhouse with lowering cloud and fog, which caused a bit of a panic amongst her security team. We sat chatting over a cup of tea until they could get a car to us.
She was both admired and hated, so I hope the Labour Party and the usual loudmouths manage to maintain some dignity after her death.

ps:- I was also offered a small fortune if I could somehow arrange for her to fall out of the helicopter at 2,000ft.

Re: Thatcher dead
Great story tut
My father however admired her, as a business owner during her time as PM.
I once had to intervene a very heated debate between them at one of my kids birthdays

I hope this too - my father-in-law is a passionate working class Thatcher-hater and I'll jump down his throat at anything disrespectful said.tut wrote:She was both admired and hated, so I hope the Labour Party and the usual loudmouths manage to maintain some dignity after her death.

Re: Thatcher dead
Dignity?? Youve got to be joking? I almost feel bad as Ive always been brought up to respect the dead. Call me a loudmouth if you want but ill show her the same dignity she showed us in out time of grief. So:

Re: Thatcher dead
I did think about just not posting anything but ask yourself honestly:
If one of your family had died and someone in power fabricated a story that they had caused it themself, then made up that when the ambulance arrived you were dipping their pockets and tried to stop them doing CPR, and when the police arrived you pissed on them, would you?

Re: Thatcher dead
No just lots of stupid Policemen who needed a clever ruthless polititian with control over the press to cover up for all the people they killed.

Just realised I can't close my own thread, so it's up to the mods.
Mike, as previously requested, please refrain from personal grievances.
There's a perfectly futile argument on pistonheads - try there, I like to think SE is better than this.
Thanks

Re: Thatcher dead
She was a charismatic leader. I wish we still had some people like her in modern politics.
RIP
PS - I have many friends on Facebook doing the predictable grave dancing today. Fairly sure she wasn't a Gadaffi or Saddam...

Re: Thatcher dead
There was certainly an arrogance to think she could impose poll tax on the Scots without a mandate. But that aside, she did many things we would not change now, and I recon my fortunes would have been for the worse had she never come to power. RIP Maggie Thatcher

Re: Thatcher dead
First British female PM - can't knock her for her determination and ability.
Personally I reckon if it had been a man in power doing exactly the same things he wouldn't have got nearly as much flak as she did.
