Re: Big Brother IS watching
Chevy have had something fitted for years, can tell speed and stuff after a collision.
Got an owner in the uk done about two years ago as copper got court order from chevy and they had to surrender the information .
Think it's standard fitment in america ?

Not a bad thing IMO. I have my wife's car hooked up to send me overspeed alerts by email if she > 10% over the speed limit. I get emails when she arrives at her destination too. Means I don't have to keep phoning checking up on her and the kids. Piece of mind for me to be honest. When the kids start driving I want to be able see how they are driving. First notification of loss is a huge thing in the insurance industry. Currently only 5% of claims come direct to the insurer, the majority via another party (claims companies for example). Insurance companies can save millions if they can contact the driver first hence they want a black box in every car. Its another way to assess risk now they cannot use sex (since 2013) to distinguish. Granted eventually if you drive in a risky fashion then yes your policy will increase but if you don't on a normal commute it may get cheaper in general. Maybe just start to budget for fun/riskier driving in the way you do for tyres and track days.

Genuinely amazed. What do you do with the info?scott_e wrote:Not a bad thing IMO. I have my wife's car hooked up to send me overspeed alerts by email if she > 10% over the speed limit. I get emails
I hope you have some sort of graph pinned up on the fridge charting this

Its a brave man that pulls his Mrs up for her driving
We have Anns car set with an alert tone at 77mph but that is for both of us and purely because it is so easy to inadvertently drift into ticket creating speeds if you weren't paying attention.
I think black boxes on become mandatory for all new cars in America after 2014.
The thought of the insurance industry having access to your driving record makes me shudder.
How many people are going to think they are great drivers because they never do over 40 but get a good record from the black box because of it .
You could be sat in the fast lane of the M8 doing 40 and it still would show up as you being a careful driver.

Re: Big Brother IS watching
SsMy pal just passed her test and looked properly into this.
You get three warnings before your premium is increased.
1 event = 1 warning
But warnings are for things like :-
braking sharply - 1 event (someone pulls in front of you)
Speed you take a bend at - 1 event ( swerving to avoid a careless pedestrian)
Acceleration - 1 event ( misjudge a junction, and have to put the foot down a bit)
Not driving ecconomically (i sh*t you not) some companies are talking about including that !
I'd be on massive premium from first day !!!
You think it's just speeding - think again.

I would hate that. Wouldn't mind knowing mrs isn't doing stupid speeds and arrives safely. Also a worrier
Re: Big Brother IS watching
So you have similar devices fixed to your own fleet so she knows how you drive?scott_e wrote:jj wrote:Genuinely amazed. What do you do with the info?scott_e wrote:Not a bad thing IMO. I have my wife's car hooked up to send me overspeed alerts by email if she > 10% over the speed limit. I get emails

Big Brother IS watching
Gareth I have had a couple of family members / friends in accidents so worrying if they are home safe is not that odd...
Re: Big Brother IS watching
I am guilty of over worrying i know but being able to monitor gives me piece of mind especially now i have young children.
Re: Big Brother IS watching
I'd get "piece of mind" [sic] too if I tried to monitor my wife's driving remotely / tell her off for doing 78mph via email
