Hardtop anyone? Info needed

Post by pizzaboy » Wed Sep 07, 2005 3:56 pm

Anyone selling a hardtop for an S1? And how much should I pay for a reasonable one on ebay? Reason is mainly because aftermarket items seem to be not too bad at 750 odd quid, but are they recommended?

ther is an original one on ebay at the moment for about £300.
I would go for lotus one rather than after market, expect to pay £300-£600 it will probably cost £50- £100 to paint if it's not your colour. My car is Azure blue and I picked up a black hard top withthe intention of opainting it but the black looks great withthe blue so left it as is.

if you are quick you could get a bargain. i'm sure tnt will collect for you.

I wonder what that is for? I dont recognise it, the indent in the middle looks like its not off an elise. Unless its an aftermarket one.

I think a black one would, as stephen says, look pretty mean on your naughtylass blue car.

Not seen an aftermarket one, mine is a lotus one, and as has been spotted many times I like to have it on!

Why bother with a hard top?
I got one free with mine. Took it off the day I got the car and put it on again last November with the intention of leaving it on for the winter. It was off within 3 days and it's only been back on when I was moving house. Also when it rains and you open the doors, the sills get drenched cos there's nothing to stop the water running straight off the rood. At least with the soft top it just soaks most of it up.

The only benefit I've found with the hard top is that the car looks great with it on :P

I'm sure that the one on ebay was an aftermarket elise one but hay ho.
Si All your points are the same for us S1 owners wet sills etc but in the winter the S1 is as permiable as a sieve and the hard top turns the car into an all year car. You will end up loosing the use of a room or an entire garage wall in the summer though.

The soft top only leaks badly if it's not waterproofed properly or fitted roughly.... Needs to be cleaned and fabsil'd a few times a year for full effect and the sides need to be pulled towards you while fitting the front slot <fnarr>. That keeps the sides low enough to stop the A pillar drip... supposedly.

The only plus to an aftermarket one (B&C, Eliseparts, et al) is that they fit differently. The Lotus one requires that you take off the roll bar cover (and find somewhere to keep it) while the aftermarkets clip to the cant rail posts and slot in the holes on the Windscreen surrounds. Means a slightly higher roofline tho...

Much cheaper to put on a carport and let's face it, if you're out with a hardtop on, there's something very much the matter with you... <cough>JJ<cough>

Even easier (and cheaper!) to buy a shower cape and put it on over the roof :thumbsup

Or have a top-heavy lovely to hand, to stand in the rain with a large brolly and a white T-shirt....
