Ginetta G40R

Post by pete » Mon Sep 03, 2012 8:34 pm

Am I the only one who keeps eyeing these with increasingly lustful eyes?

200bhp, 850 kg and race ready. And a pretty pretty thing....

That is cheap - is that a 1.4? Nice alternative to a Caterham I suppose but god knows how you'd use it on the road?

I really like the look of them too. Autocar have been running one and it gets a great write up. Love to have a go in one - do they have any dealers or is it direct from the factory only?

I am a big fan too but not sure if I could see past a nice used Exige S for £30k.

Certainly a contender…..

But I wouldn’t want to give up my exige 190 for it……the lotus looks a lot better and looks a bit better build IMHO…..would like to compare thou on the road and track…..noticed no spoilers and what tyres choices are available?

What are the ginetta junior, times around the Knockhill track? Anyone know…..

However, if ginetta made a road going G50/55 I would be interested…they would have to make it for £40,000 to under cut everyone…

i get the distinct feeling that autocar are being quite charitable with their long term test.....can't put my finger on it but the few reports i've read seems to suggest it's still a work in progress.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

The first car they ran was a pre-production model and the build quality, panel gaps in particular, did look a bit dodgy. Perhaps unwise for Ginetta to let them have a pre prod car, but presumably Autocar were cutting them a bit of slack because of it.

I think you are right about Autocar. They ran a track test between a Dacia Duster and a Ginetta in the wet. Utter waste of time. And utterly without any science "We thoguht we'd try a 4wd with more grip against a light rwd car would be interesting."

It wasn't. It was silly. And pointless.

ANd yes the build quality isn't there (between a roadcar and a race car) but there's still something about it I really like.

Fit some real Mk2 MX5 headlights, instead of the stickers, and IVA it!*

(*To be honest, I reckon while the SVA system wasn't too bad - Look at Ed China's mobile office/ shed / sofa - They've tightened up of late, so you'd need to fit all sorts of safety items to scrape through...)

Good value for a trackday shed - Cheap as chips to run with a 1.4 Zetec, and could no doubt handle 1.8 and 2.0 flavours it you wanted to go faster... :)

I love them. Now sure if I'd be brave enough to run one as a daily driver though.

Same idea but at the other end of the scale :

Could build a pretty fresh, supercharged one of these on a superlight chassis for less than £10k.

It's definitely in need of some visual tweaks but lightweight coupe with Mx5 underpinnings, what's not to like?

I think more than a little Lotus influence on the back of the white & orange ones.... and I'm seeing influence of TVR Tuscan Racer on the blue one. Looks fine until you look at the wheels/arches.
I have no signature.
