Nice reliable cheap estate car

My girlfriends fathers car is on its last legs so have offered to source him a replacement, for his current knackered fiesta.
He's retired now and does some dog walking, so an bigish estate would be ideal. Performance and handling are not least bit important just something that is improvent on his current car
Budget wise is around £2k -£2.5k, and needs to be cheap to run and maintain. I know he has always wanted a BMW but not sure if an old 3 series or 5 series would be a liability
The sensible choice would obviously be a Toyota or Nissan type thing bit it would be nice if i could find something that was maybe a bit more luxurious or prestige
C class or E class Mercedes
3 or 5 series BMW
Rover 75 Tourer
Subaru Legacy
Volvo V70
MG ZT-T

Come to think of it a nice Fabia estate would be cheaper to run, on the basis his dog ain't huge
Worthwhile others to consider:
Ford Focus or C-max
Renault Modus or Scenic

An Avensis would be a good shout. Honda Accord ? Skoda's are overpriced.

Assumptions are being made about bigger estates
As I said above, unless he's got something like a great dane, he might want something smaller, coming from an old foostie

I just popped onto autotrader and had a nosey I discounted the Renaults and Daewoo's as they are Renaults and Daewoo's
You got bigger cars with lower mileage so I picked them. The Ford's are a good shout

With the revised original post - I'd say a well-specced Volvo V70 would be a top choice
