Redundant

Yesterday afternoon we were told that the company is in liquidation and we are all redundant with immediate effect. sh*t end to the day truth be told.

We reduced our staff by 75% and all took a 25 % pay cut over the last 4 years but in the end even that wasn't enough and the bank, which had been propping up the company, decided to withdraw its support. It wasn't entirely unexpected, we had been struggling for a while but still, the speed at which things came to an end came as a shock. I am unemployed for the first time since I was 13. After the initial shock in the office the atmosphere was rather bizarre, it was almost a feeling of relief. Like an old relative who had been suffering from a terminal disease suddenly popping their clogs, you're sad but relieved they are at peace. Weird.
Felt sorry for the high heid yin though, he was distraught, very much a broken man when he had to tell us the news.

Had been thinking about moving for a while but decided I may as well stick it out to the end for the redundancy payment. Luckily I foresaw this coming and have been putting money away for a while so financially I am ok and the cars will be here for a while yet :D

I decided yesterday to get as drunk as humanly possible (which I did) and spend the next day watching Jeremy Kyle and then sleeping in the afternoon, cos that's what unemployed people do (which I didn't) in the end I updated my CV and applied to a few jobs.

Anyway, wasn't going to post this but thought I might as well, you never know. If anyone is aware of a position for a highly talented Engineer please let me know.

Sorry to hear the news Kenny. I've been made redundant twice and both times it has led to better jobs, so try and see the positives and look at it as a chance to move on to something better.

Fingers crossed you find a new job soon.

Stick in there.

Really sorry to hear this mate but it seems ur prepared and fairly positive. Aberdeen just now has a shortage of engineers and are now looking at doing conversions from various industries. We just had a guy start with us to work on sonar who's background is in the food hygiene industry so i hopefully things are similar down with you.
Craig.
On a side note bankers are the scum of the earth, sorry if that's anyone on here but in my experience in the last three years it's been really bad.

Should hopefully be a lot more money, one of the technicians handed in his notice last week, moving to a job where he tripled his salary. Contract though, was thinking about maybe going contract as well, or starting out on my own. One of the options for general ponderment over the weekend.

Sorry to hear Kenny, like Craig said, plenty opportunity in Aberdeen. What was it you did BTW in case I hear of anything going. Got a few mates who work around Prestwick airport etc.

That sucks Kenny. Happened to me in 2010, started a new job 4 weeks later, all worked out rather nicely in the end. So don't worry things will work out. What sort of engineer are you? Big shortage of skilled people in Aberdeen like Craig & Mike said, might not help you if you are down the road though! Any good at Electronics/GPS type stuff? We're needing a few guys at the moment.

Sorry to hear this Kenny. As Craig and Mike have said, the oil industry's very buoyant at the moment. Are you a structural engineer? I'm sure if you fancy a move to Aberdeen you could have something pretty quickly - have a look on oilcareers.com. Contract is definitely the way to go. Let me know if you need any pointers
