Well well well!
Back from hols, found it in the bottom of the suitcase, thought "fck it" and put it on charge...
About a minute later it made that "beep-bap" noise they make when being charged, and the screen showed a very very dim version of the battery logo... so I tried to turn it on. Everything was fine, apart from the screen only being barely visible in the bright lights of the kitchen. So I thought it was the lighting which was fooked.
Went into the brightness settings and it was about middle set and adjusted it. All back to normal!
Everything works!
One happy son, and an even happier (for financial reasons as it's only a few months old) dad
So I suppose the moral of the story is never give up
