Noise limit test

Post by ryallm » Tue Aug 29, 2006 9:06 am

I am heading down to a TD at Croft this weekend which has a 98 Db static limit. Not wholly confident that my Larini will make it. It was measured at 96 last time I was at Croft, but I am convinced it has got louder since then. Bit of a long shot, but before I go through the hassle of putting the standard exhaust back on, does anyone in the Edinburgh area happen to have access to a noise meter?

Oh, and I should have mentioned that there are still a couple of places left at Croft on Sat if anyone wants to join Tim and myself on a real circuit rather than that wee kart track in fife :D

Do you have a cat? That would be the most obvious choice....

Yup, cat still in. Jamie told me my car sounded at least as loud as a stage 2 from the pit wall last time out at KH, but the Croft noise test is static in the pit lane and the Larini is only really loud under load.

If it is a static test, what has worked in the past is a wad of wire wool part way up the end pipe, with a non obvious piece of wire around it to pull it back out.

Also cheating works if there is only one tester, with no one looking at your tacho. Take the revs up slowly and hold 500 rpm below what they asked for.

A cunning plan - there was only one tester there last time

As tut says, dont go to the full revs if you can possibly avoid it. Another tip is not to lift off until the test is finished, as lifting off can make the exhaust louder. Robin taught me this one.

Thankfully the honda will always pass static noise tests as it doesnt engage the VTEC and wont rev up pass 5500 rpm when at a standstill. clever engine. Mines would fail most drive-by's though :(

Make sure it is well jammed down as the wire wool will glow red hot and can be spat out. There is egg on your face and there is molten metal on the marshalls!

Mine won't rev past 5k unless it's warmed up, do the yotas do something similar?

yeh, the honda has the low temp cut out for the VTEC, and the low oil pressure cutout for the VTEC but it also has a standstill cut out. Its like a mini launch control, thats perfectly calibrated for AO48's

yeah thats right, temp guage needs to register before it will let you, even if the cars been running and turned off.
