Just bought F1 2011 - What wheel to get?

Post by vxc » Sun Nov 13, 2011 7:24 pm

Hey as per title,

is currently on Steam for PC at 14.99 so bargain.

looking to play this with a wheel, any recomends? will want to mount it onto my desk preferably,
do i need a full pedal set and gear set or will a wheel with the paddle shift be okay.

I dont really have any other racing games to play but may now if i get a decent enough wheel...

Logitec G25/Driving Force GT is very good for the money.
Logitec G27 is much nicer but much more money for what essentially does the same thing.
If I had more money than sense I'd get a G27.

G25, it's what we calibrated the pc version of F1 too in the office ;)

Big patch out in the coming weeks for it too.

Ooh, £14.99 you say. I am a big fan of iRacing on the PC but subscription based with add-on content available at extra cost.

Been a fan of Logitech wheels for more than 10 years. I have had my G25 for at least 4 years and it is still perfect, really robust. It comes with a flimsy shifter but I only ever use the flappy paddles.

I think the only real benefit to the G27 is 6 buttons on the wheel instead of 2. G27 was the replacement for the G25 so eBay is probably your only option if you want one of those.

Might be worth considering a cheaper used alternative before sinking £x00s into something you might not use all that often?...
Logitech Momo steering wheel is pretty decent, ffeeback, pedals, paddle+stick shift. Some used examples available on ebay here:

theres even someone selling one in East Kilbride here:

The car handling is a big improvement from 2011 and the co-op feature is cool to play with a friend. Like I said earlier, there is a 2nd patch being released v. soon.

Been playing it a lot.....

The full length races are brilliant. To give you an idea we had a go the other night where 3 of us ran completely different set ups. I ran high down-force vs low. Sectors 1 and 3 I was getting whipped on the straights but in sector 2 I got it all back, and then some, in the corners.
After nearly sixty laps - and being laps apart at one point - we entered the final two laps side by side. Over taking and defending using Kers and DRS, switching back and forth again and again. Mate lost it and span on a corner and I sailed over the line for the win. Great fun. The only downside was another mate got lapped and threw his rattle out of the pram and switched off (you know who you are  ).

Clean racing and loads of fun. Strategy and set up playing big parts. Best driving game I've ever played. Cant wait for the patch.

Really enjoying this game. Got the cheaper logitech wheel and its certainly a lot faster than the controller. Thats me half way thru expert level just wish the opposition were a little faster

I really hope they fix the lobby countdown timer bug in the next update. Love the game but by god that's annoying. :)

Also, I use the old official Microsoft Xbox 360 wheel. It works great but since they stopped making it it's jumped up in price.

I have a logitech G27 and could not recomend it highly enough. It is a lot of money for a steering wheel, when you take into account all the hours of fun you will have with it, its not a bad investment.
