Torque vs Power

Post by Rich H » Mon Aug 14, 2006 9:38 am

Can some one who understands such things explain the difference between torque and power?

I understand the application of torque, but how does power translate? I can't get my head round it.

I am pretty confident that I am down on torque as predicted, yet in gear acceloration seems to be more effortless than before. Is this the effect of more power?

Thanks!

power = (torque x rpm) / 5252

So you can get an awful lot of power from a very small amount of torque as long as you rev it really high (bike, F1.) Or an awful lot of power from a huge amount of torque without having to rev it much at all (yankee V8.)

Basically revs then?

I have found the performance I thought I had lost, it was hiding at over 5k rpm.... :roll:

Torque is the push from each firing of the cylinder, power is the rate at which work is being done (more-or-less proportional to the rate at which fuel is being burnt). A (old style grinding) windmill generates colossal torque but in the end can produce only a small amount of power because it cannot spin very fast.

It's well worth checking your lambda at high rpm if running on MEMS still - depending on how well you've done with your mods you may find it running a bit lean esp. if you increase the aperture of the throttle - the engine is fuelled using data from the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor - this translates into air flow, but when you widen the aperture, the ECU has no way of knowing you did that and so underestimates the air flow for a given vacuum reading (same vacuum, wider aperture, more air).

You can compensate for this by increasing fuel pressure slightly (the MEMS doesn't have direct visibility of fuel flow, just injector opening times), though this is a crude way of achieving the right thing. This can be done by butchering the fuel pressure regulator (not very scientific) or purchasing an adjustable one and trimming it up until the lambda at full throttle under load in the upper engine speed range is good. Within reason this shouldn't effect cruise economy as the ECU runs closed loop when crusing and should trim back any excess fuelling.

Cheers,
Robin

Cool, thanks Robin. I am getting a fair bit of burbling and popping under low throttle and on overrun following a sharp lift off, IIRC that is due to under fuelling? The plugs were a light dusty brown in colour.
