Looking to buy one of these, quite commonplace offshore so plenty of scope for getting heaps of movies & full tv prog series

Also wanting to use for storing heaps of iTunes cr@p thus feeing up space on PC & laptops in the house.

Now, a bit of hunting on ebuyer & amazon shows possibly 1TB to be decent when it comes to capacity/vfm ratio (tight dundonian faction )

And had kind of plumped for one on ebuyer around the £70 mark but then noticed more expensive ones with the USB 3.0 connections, which apparently is much faster.

So - questions - is it worth the extra dosh for USB 3.0 over USB 2.0?

Any other suggestions for one much appreciated

Unless you are tansferring lots of data all the time then I would not bother. Lidl and Aldis often do very cheap external drives I have a few and they are all still up and running error free.

I just bought a 1Tb USB3 drive and whilst its quicker it does not meet the 10 times faster as quoted but this is due to the Harddrive itself, Im getting around 45Mb second transfer if thats any help.

Only if you have usb 3.0 on your laptop, or you can retro fit a usb 3.0 pci card in to your PC. You might be better with 2x 500GB drives like the WD passport. The 1TB ones are based on a 3.5" hard drive and require a seperate power supply, were as the smaller ones (2.5") take power from the usb connection on the laptop/pc.

The one I have is a 1Tb USB3 and 2.5", it needs no external power supply but uses 2 USB ports for the power.

Had many different external hard drives in the past and had problems with a few makes, however I do find the Iomega Prestige range dependable and good value.

I have four (3 x 1TB & 1 x 1.5TB) and they are on 24/7 and no problems. Most bought at Tesco during promotions. All connected to Apple Macs.

If you want something portable look for a laptop type 2.5" HDD which is powered over USB.
Might be slightly slower but much less hassle with power adapters, etc.
USB3 not worth the effort unless your computer supports it.
I bought a 320GB Western Digital Elements from Tesco for about 40 pounds at Xmas.
You can get 500GB for that price now!

Erica recently picked up a 1tb larger drive (ie with power adapter) for 45 quid. There are dome very decent deals out there on these things, but as others say, no point in usb 3 if you don't have it on your pc or indeed for a smaller usb powered 2.5 drive as I reckon it'll be slower anyways..
