As y'all know i'm in the US with Lotus for a while, and lo and behold the second I get back to Manhattan the Iphone 3G dies, which is handy at the start of a 2 week motorshow....I just get "no service", no signal etc. Tried the usual removing the SIM, resetting the network settings etc etc - I can't install Itunes on this work laptop so can't resync it....any other ideas?

Cheers G

Given that you are in NY then find a local Apple store and pop in. Open later in the states IIRC and they should be able to sort you out.

yep but this particular phone has been "JB"d in the past (I lost my original one) so a factory reboot might kill it

Graeme, Could be a network issue - I had a similar problem a couple of years ago in Hungary. Tried everything I could think of then found out it was a local network problem so there was no signal to pick up. As Mike says above check with an Apple store they should know if there's network issues or offer advice if it's your handset.
Hope you get it sorted & enjoy the motorshow. :thumbsup

Available providers come up as T Mobile and AT&T, but when I try and connect, I get "your chosen network is no longe available" - the guy I'm working with has a 3G with AT&T and a strong signal so it's some kinda network connection problem. Phone antenna?? or does the wifi use the same (ignorant faction).

Keith, should be good - back to selling some cars...;)

Have you been going mental with the data (e.g. posting sh*t on Facebook ;)) and maybe been blocked from roaming?

there have been some updates ;) but it's not the data that's the problem, I have "no service" and can't connect to any phone network for voice calls - or anything else. Wifi still works...will try calling Vodafone in UK but they'll be snoozing right now...

If you press simultaneously the on/ off button at the top, and the main button on the front for a few seconds, that will reset it without losing your own settings. Worth a try, it has worked for me in the past

Pop into the apple store and get them to try your sim in one of their phones or even just borrow someone elses. if it works then the problem is with your handset. if it doesn't then the issue is between Vod and At&t.

If you can see available networks then it sounds like the problems not with your phone - if it can see them it should be able to connect to them. Got to be a Vodaphone/AT&T issue

Yeah but if they've blocked your roaming access you'll not get any connection other than wifi. Similar thing was happening to Lorraine when we were on holiday once, Virgin Mobile phone had disabled roaming on her account, though it was like that from the minute she switched the phone on.

EDIT: just read simon mentioned about roaming too, I would agree with him, there is a chance that your bill is really quite high (especially if you are using data) I think they have a cut off point of £40 ish on data and I assume there will be an overall bill point that they will stop. There is a chance that they have cut you off if you dont normally spend that sort of money, bit like a credit cards do when they suspect fraud.

Your other option is to go into an AT&T shop and get a GoPhone sim, stick $25 dollars on it that will last 90 days and your off. You won't get data (as at&t got apple to remove the option to configure data if it picks up an at&t go phone sim) but if you can get wireless at some point on the phone visit, http://www.unlockit.co.nz and go to the APN settings for at&t follow the instructions and the data will work ;). You just then need to phone up the gophone top-up and add a data package.

Thanks,
G
