NLC forward facing Scamera on Corpstorphine Rd?
NLC forward facing Scamera on Corpstorphine Rd?
Mrs was drving to the airport to catch the "oh-bleep-o-clock" flight to Stanstead this morning. So head out of town on the Corstorphine Rd.
She was getting harrassed by Taxi's undertaking her doing well over the 30 limit at the Zoo.
In an attempt to move into the inside lane to let them past she thinks she sped up (she's kicking herself for being intimidated) slightly... (I was at home wrangling a 1 yr old at the time so don't know full details)
There was a flash from in front of her...
Apparently there were loads of other cars on the road and others coming in the other direction...
Could she have been done by a camera facing her or is it someone in the other direction who's triggered it?
Ta in advance...

Front facing cameras don't flash.
She's fine.

Nope the bit past the zoo where the speed camera is heading into town is a 30 so does catch quite a few out!

Ah, I don't think it flashes at 40 then.mrbennybennett wrote:Nope the bit past the zoo where the speed camera is heading into town is a 30 so does catch quite a few out!

Quite accurate, though cameras that are primarily used to catch people from behind (and flash) have been used to convict people that purposely speed up when forward facing them to make them flash. (Regardless of the guidelines stating that they should only be used within a certain 'angle' the Police, Government, Courts (delete as appropriate) only use them as, well..... guidelines. And they pretty much ignore them as they see fit.)Shug wrote:Front facing cameras don't flash.
There have been a couple of cases where people have had points and fine from these rear facing cameras when flashed from the front. So it is possible but highly unlikely

Aye, was that not more to do with bikers going past on the rear wheel with a digit extended though? Not actual speeding? I've set off a few on the other side of the road (allegedly and by mistake if it did happen officer) over the years...ikarl wrote:

Still, minute chance that it was actually the OP's good lady that even caused the flash here. Sure she's got nothing to worry about.

As far as I'm aware, all Scottish ones are rear facing.
Basically If you can see the florescent reflective stuff on it then slow down as you can be caught by it.

I think part of it may have been back in the day (circa 90s), but for a while it's been 30 since the PC world roundabout through to town.BigD wrote:I thought it was a 40 all along that road?!
The black cabs and private hire cars are, of course, *exempt* from this limit and speed past in the green lane or harrass anyone attempting to keep to the limit (as was the case I believe this morning).

Re: NLC forward facing Scamera on Corpstorphine Rd?
If she saw the flash from ahead, she is fine. Any fixed camera in Scotland will flash from behind.
They changed the limit from the PC world roundabout all the way into town to a 30 some years back. There are 2-3 cameras in each direction in the 30 section. Anyone who thinks it's a 40 and hasn't yet been caught is very lucky indeed!
The cabs are not exempt - I assume that was a joke
The bus lane would not have active at that time in the morning, so is open to all.
Private hire cars are not allowed in that particular bus lane when it's active.
Cheers,
Robin

Yes I was joking about the cabs being exempt.
I think people (who don't know the limit) see the bit at the zoo and that it's two lans and assume that it's 40.
Like people who still think the western approach road is a 40 up to the Morrison st bridge (when it now stops way back near Fountain Park).

Re: NLC forward facing Scamera on Corpstorphine Rd?
general rule is if it's a 40, there'll be signs up saying so.
If it's a 30, there's no signs (streetlights dictate this)
/ex-driving instructor faction.
Agree with above about triggering flashes from the front - they're set up for traffic travelling in the opposite direction, so when the flashes go, you'll be out of the 'measurement' zone iyswim...
Experienced this a few times on the road north of Carter Bar when travelling to & from Hexham when I had my Griff 500

Re: NLC forward facing Scamera on Corpstorphine Rd?
The bus lanes around Edinburgh especially have incredibly varied operational times and days. No real rhyme or reason, they are just all different
Whilst it's courting an accident during busy times, due to the small size of the signs with guidance on, it's worth checking them out carefully as you pass, because there is time to be gained and harrassment to be avoided by knowing when you can and can't use the bus lanes
However watch out for destroyed drain covers when you DO use the, the buses wreck these and they'll take an Elise wheel out no problem
