Hmm... elise for under £5k? :)

Post by Bennicus » Sun Jul 16, 2006 10:57 pm

Looks like I won't be able to afford insurance renewal come September so I'm going to have to sell my pretty shiny car :( Don't suppose anyone has any suggestions for a replacement, as Elise-like as possible but *COUGH* under or around £5k? Closest I can think of is an old MR2 or MX5, hate the look of the MX5 despite the fact that it's a great car, so I might end up with the 'yota. Nowhere near the liz I'm sure (though never driven one), but I'm just after something fun and lightweight enough to handle well.

On a slightly related note... Would anyone here be interested in a vgc low-mileage S1 with a few sensible mods (eliseparts zorst, quickshift & Geary's linkage kit, brand new T1Rs all round)? :D I'll get pics and more details sorted out in Classifieds in the next couple of weeks but figured I'd give you guys early warning as I'd like it to go to a good home. Ideally I'd like to wait until mid-August so I get a chance to come on the Cloak & Dagger run as I've still not made it to a proper SE run yet, but insurance runs out late September so I don't wanna leave it too long and not find a buyer in time.

I have owned 3 Fiat X1/9's in the past. They probably count as 'Classics' now but were fab mid-engined 'mini ferrari' type cars in their time. More individual than a MR2, less bland than an MX5 (IMHO).

Mind you, they are few far between now lol.

Transfer it to an old relative and get yourself on as a named driver .

erm have you looked at a limited milage policy?

Then keep the elise as a fun car and buy a complete shed and insure it TPFT

Or you could instead of looking at a slower car look at a faster one like some form of 7 as the insurance on those is very cheap but does need a bit of mental change to run one as a daily driver

Mk1 MR2 is fun. If you can find one in decent enough condition...

A guy here at work has a Mk1 MR2 and swears by it, but he has rebuilt most of it due to rust...

Ah geez, knew I'd get into trouble for this! Well, I've already got a limited policy - 5000 miles, social & domestic use only, can't really get much cheaper unfortunately. Selling my brother for medical experiments sounds like a win/win situation but I don't think I'd get that much for him

That Fiat looks interesting, never seen one of those about. That'd stand out more than the Elise around these parts! OTOH, FR craziness in the guise of some kind of caterfield sounds like a laugh, I'll definitely have a look at that sort of thing. I'm slowly going off MR2s, I'm sure they'd feel quite sluggish compared to the Liz. Is there anyone here who owns/has owned both and could offer a comparison? Think I prefer the look of MkII MR2's, but I don't really know the differences between the MkI and MkII versions, is there much in it? Questions questions...

I've got a lovely Mk1 MR2 that coincidentally ( ) I'll be selling in the next couple of weeks. Great little car, used it for a couple of trackdays (including the East Fortune day earlier this year) and it's been a great car to own - obviously not as fast in a straight line as an Elise, but pretty good for a 1.6, 122bhp IIRC. It's also not used a drop of oil in the time I've had it, including the aforementioned trackdays

The X1/9 is quite a bit less powerful than the MR2, and personally I'd rather go for the Japanese engineering, but then I know Toyota engines are a sore point for some on here

okay more about caterhams

You ain't going to get good one for 5k double it to 10k and you can buy a Roadsport A like i got an ex racer and quite a bargain in 7 terms high spec low price.

A westy for 5 k i have not got a clue what you will get for that. Best go hunt down the westy owners club or the scottishsevens board http://scottishsevens.proboards28.com/index.cgi

insurance for mine is about £450 a year with 3 points 1 year NCB and unlimited milage :D

If you want a quick blast in the 7 then ask at the next trackday as you find them a bit different from an elise.

Just get searching there are plenty of cater-field rip offs for less money, obviously they vary in quality, but the idea is there.

Look for the cheaper cars to begin with such as Locosts (Ask Si Ironside) and Robin Hoods they start out alot cheaper then the more popular makes.
