But phase converters aren't hugely expensive these days and are damn clever

sanj, as i said on frolic, your mental for buying your own tyre changing machine, when you can just pay a local garage 20 quid to change 4 tyres. Plus the fact you mentioned that you were going to get a man in to change them on your machine. Its just a pointless waste of cash.

Don't think that'll be three phase, but I've used one with an arm that small before and I certainly wouldn't put my own wheels on one without expecting at least a little marking. Also that compressor you're getting from me wouldn't drive that.

Intersting idea TBH, I've thought of doing the same myself. You'll be wanting a balancing machine too BTW.

I couldn't find anywhere to change tyres for £20 a set which is why I bought my tyre changing machine. Even worse if it's your own tyres they just want to bend you over.

That one looks pretty good Sanj, hard to tell if 3 phase or not but I doubt it. You'd be best to view it anyway and you'd find out then. I paid about £300 for mine and that one looks better. I am always changing tyres as I have 4 sets of wheels and slicks don't last long on track so being able to change them myself has saved a fortune. I use a relatively small compressor and it works perfect.

If you've got the space and change a few tyres I'd do it. Mine has saved me a fortune in money and time.

I must be lucky, a garage within a 1/4 of a a mile from my house does whatever i want to my tyres, new or old, for 20 quid for 4, even if they're on the car. Saves me jacking it up and leaving it on axle stands.

I am fortunate as well, John Duthie does mine for free, even though I do not buy the tyres from him.

I went round about 10 tyre places one day to get tyres put on a set of wheels, which were off the car and nobody would do that for under £7 a wheel. I went into one place and they were all standing round doing nothing and still wouldn't cut their price. A complete waste of a morning and then I had to go back and collect them later that day.

So I bought a tyre machine and now can do 4 wheels tyres in about an hour. Any time I like. It doed take a bit of practice though.

Was winding you up about getting a man to do it! I too cannot find £20 for all four corners and use Stevie @ Pronto when needed. The rational behind it is that the merc uses a set and a bit of tyres per year, I have (had, another story) snow tyres for the Mini and the 340 uses a set and a bit per year too.
Got a garage now with some space and thought what the heck.

Lots of good advice from Ferg, D & Hambo. Would make a spanners sesh even more useful for the SE masssssive.

Good thing the toy budget is on hold right now. Although if Hambo taught me correctly that is the tyre machine I do not want... ?
