Watching the F1 last week, The "Question Mark ?" item came on. Kimi's rac engineer busy explaining driver weight vs. car weight, only a guy that was in my class at uni'..... Should I be envious ?. His will be a high pressure job (so's mine, designing "high pressure" kit for oil production, ha ha) but isn't that the ultimate petrol head job ?. What down sides will there be to his job ?.

Downsides: Constant travel round all the race circuits all around the world :D , though he will have to watch boring F1 racing :(

Downsides:
From what I have heard the pay isnt particularly good, thats reserved for the high heid yins.
Despite travelling around the world to various exotic location they get to see very little of it as they are too busy setting up or repairing the F1 car after its been totalled by the driver. Its often said that F1 mechanics only time to catch some sleep during the weekend as when they are racing.

On the plus side I suppose it does attract a certain amount of kudos and the opportunity to nobble shallow but attractive burds.

Mate used to be a pilot for McLaren, spent most of his time on a runway near woking with a spare engine in the back. Rarely for to go to venues. Know what you mean though.

One of my mates works as a mechanic for a Group N world rally team. He travels to about 2/3rds of the WRC events. Works like mad, sees very little of the rally and doesn't get paid mega bucks. But he is a petrolhead and is happy.

Another friend of a friend is an Engineer at Lotus. He only graduated a couple of years ago, but has already been responsible for some pretty cool stuff. He was project manager on the Exige GT1 car, for the client in the middle east! Now that is worthy of some envy!
