Ok people just looking for your thoughts. I will most likley be trading in our gas guzzling Vectra VXR[its been fun :( ] tommorow for either a 118d 1series BMW or a Golf TDI both 140 hp 59 plate. I've had golfs before but not since the mark four but BMW is new to me so whats it to be.Thanks Ian

Depends on spec of the beemer as I think they can look quite girly sometimes and the golf looks boring.
All in my opinion, of course ;)

The Golf has a weak Gearbox.......both Alan Gourlay and myself will testify to that!!!

Guy at work just bought a 120d, nice looking car and he says he's getting amazing MPG and sporty when it needs to be too.

I've got a 123d which returns around 50mpg when motorway cruising and averages around 40mpg. Plenty quick enough when needed.
M-sport package makes it look less girly but ride gets quite harsh.

I tested both the 120d and 123d before eventually buying my 123d coupe. There is a huge difference between the 120 and 123 so the 118 will be quite slow.
Handles pretty well and if you give it the beans it can stay close to alot of things. (As a classic scoob and an S4 will testify)

I get about 42-45mpg on my 60mile trip to work on the A90 so I would imagine the 118 will do a litlle better.

I'm really enjoying my 123d.....great comprimise!
A joke in the snow however, as bad as the M3 was, if not worse!

A few bags of cement in the boot from work sorted that for me. Vast improvement over the zero traction without the added weight.

Went back to Arnold Clark today with full intention of buying Golf TDI if they could get the price down £200 ish on the price we haggled on yesterday. There response was no sorry its actually going to cost £400 more today as yesterday was the last day in the quarter. I thought it was a April fool  but no they even said it with a straight face so F##k you Arnold as we now pick up our 118d on Tue from Duggie Parks Hamilton who were fantastic to deal with. Will miss the VXR though . The road tax even went down today so its £30 for the year yahoo.

Key point there is you never buy a car from Arnold Shark in the first place... I'd actually go so far as testing the car etc at a Sharks, then phone up a dealer down south and get a plane/train to pick it up. Sharks are just nightmares to deal with...

Had nothing but trouble with them in the past.

Hope you enjoy the new motor Ian.

snow tyres for winter will make a HUGE difference.

My 735i in Montreal was epic with Snow Tyres on! Used to take it skiing and go the long way for 20 miles of drifting  :thumbsup
