Post by ed » Wed Jun 21, 2006 4:14 pm

Some of us have been enjoying a bit of banter about the whole world cup thing, some of us cheering on/supporting engerland, some of us not, which is fair enough.....

Just came across this in the news:

In all seriousness though, this would have been some fcuking junkie nutcase who would have been just as likely to smack you for looking at him. It's no excuse, but it's certainly not indicative of Scottish society...

Err, but it was in Edinburgh - Inverleith Park no less - I doubt that the attacker was a junkie - more likely drunk. As an Englishman abroad in both Scotland and Germany and as a German abroad when moving back to England I can confirm that there are always people prepared to have a go at you for being the wrong nationality. However, football-related intolerance apart, I think Scotland feels less racist than the other places I have lived in, which is cool.

Though I still cringe at the scottish rhyming slang for various stereotypical corner shops ... :thumbsdown

What is missed (on purpose) by the media is that these attacks wouldn't of happened if these people weren't wearing English football shirts. So there fore weren't racist attacks! Scotland get's 99.8% of it's media thro London, normally we hardly notice until it comes to one of the few things we 'feel' independent about i.e. football. And being force fed day and night English Football doesn't go down well.

Imagine New Zealand having Australian Rugby on their telly night and day, including in commercials etc etc etc, there would be riots on the streets!
But why is the media here telling us that two over hyped random attacks make every Scottish person racist???.... because for the BBC in particular (the main channel running the story) for them to change the 'system', would virtually be the end of the BBC as we know it. The BBC takes almost all of its licence fee from all it's regions, including English one's, straight back to London. So the real message our beloved BeeB is trying to tell 'us' is, put up with it or we'll brand you racist!
