Guys,
really fancy one so I test drove a new E220 CDI....mildly dissapointing sound insulation/road noise...
Would a E270 or E320 CDI have more?
Also do you know of anything to really watch out for if i go for a 5 yr old example....
Anyone delighted with theirs...?!
And finally.....have they improved their build quality yet?!?!
Cheers boys....all advice appreciated...

Was talking to my local garage about a pre loved
W211 barge to replace my aging W210. Full of horror stories ref build quality, £50k and the door handles come off, electrics pack up etc.
The old lad I bought the 320CDI W210 from bought a spanking new W211 270CDI and was gutted to be getting worse mpg.

Would prob still get one as everyone had told me that Audi Allroad is pants and they did not make a Phaeton estate

my mate has a w211 which he uses as a taxi at weekends. it's an E270.
does big miles but isn't thrashed, well cared for and it's been fine - apart from a turbo letting go. he drove it from edinburgh up to aberdeen minus turbo with no issues and it was fixed under warranty. He's planning replacing it with another one - probably a 320cdi just for the extra go, when the time comes.
check what tyres are on the one you drove - a change from P6000s to Eagle F1s transformed my mum's S-Type diesel. More grip, more traction, FAR less road noise.
Our Saab 9-3 lacks a little insulation: 20mins with some glass wool house insulation sorted that out.

I use to work with a chauffeur drive company that ran a fleet of 15 E class diesels and S class diesels. S320CDi was not a bad car, although not hugely economical. The W211 was a very poor car for merc. Too many problems to list, not helped by terrible service from the dealers. Older mercs were good, newer ones are much improved (so I hear), but I would not touch something from them from that era. Just my 2p.
