340R vs Caterham

Post by Andy G » Sat Jun 10, 2006 5:37 pm

Thoughts gents?

Looks like the R may be retiring in one way or the other!

Looking forward as ever, and seeing the Caterhams and 340's yesterday got me thinking!

Pro's / cons?

I only use the car at weekends now

cheers

Andy

get a caterham if you fit in it and just want a track car with occasional road, and you dont care what you look like. Its miles ahead of any lotus on the track, even a honda powered one.

Get a 340R if you want to look good whilst still having fun on track. you can pose, whilst still having something thats quicker than your 111R on the road and track.

I hope you have a garage for either.

what you gonna do with the 111R though, fix it and sell it or sell it as it is??

P.S loads more experienced guys who actually own 340R's and Cat's so no doubt they will be able to offer you experience, but we talked about this very question on the nurburgring/spa trip

How about an Ariel Atom 2 ? Thats what I would've got instead of the Exige but not ready for zero roof yet :)
The Atom2 was about 6 secs faster round the Top Gear track than the Exige S and almost matched the time of the Radical.

I am no expert on either but would rather the 340 as they are so damn cool. Atoms are neat, are they not bigger money?

Andy,

The beauty of a Caterham is that (like mine) you can swap between aero (like I am 95% of the time) and windscreen (& therefore roof :D ) if you are touring with a laydee

Next time you see me at KH I'll happily give you a pax run - 200bhp/490kg makes things quite lively

PM me if you have any questions

For form over function then, for me, it has to be the 340R.

If your looking for more of a track toy, and you can fit in one, then a quick cat is probably the way to go.

Personally I'd love and Atom :D

An Atom would be cool! You can pick up a new honda'd one for £23k no?

I think so - but you want the S/C one with the uprated brakes which comes in just above 31k IIRC.

They have a fairly cool website too

Andy - if you do go Atom, first thing to do would be to take it to Mark at Banchory. They are supposedly really setup dependant and have been known to come out of the 'factory' (shed) with fairly interesting handling...
