New laptop advice please!?

This week is proving out to be a rather expensive one for me!

4 new tyres, MT and then an A service on monday

But that bit is definently worth it!

However, my very kind brother decided it would be a good idea to pour a glass of wine over me laptop and now its well and truly fecked!

To be fair it need replaced (its was a 550mhz celeron processor)

but following on from the what we can do to help each other thread, can anyone help source me a new half decent one that doesnt cost the earth. cheers Ed

what is the chat with dual processors etc?!

my old laptop was an advent and was trouble free for the past 6 years.
Was i just lucky?!

Avoid HP from my limited experience. 2 laptops, one failed with a design fault after 17 months (loads of suff on the web about it, they all do it sooner or later). the current one was through an HCI scheme at work, it's HP too but just a bit rubbish and has had to go back twice already.

Afraid I can't help personally Ed, but my old flatmate got a pretty swish Toshiba lappy from PC world recently. the other half and her dad have been using toshibas trouble free for the past 2 years.

If I had the cash, i'd stump for one from this range:-

I've been using Mesh desktops since 2002 without fail (even through my chainsmoking days!) and have never had one peep of trouble from them.

cheers guys, Am happy to spend around £600 ish.
When i bought my original laptop i also bought a 5 year all your money back warranty which has just paid me back £469!

as i didnt claim!

found these on ebay: Click me which look quite good. I bidded on one yesterday that went for £580 which i reckon is a good price. What do you guys think?

Ross: do you think you could get one like this any cheaper?!

Check out ebuyer and novatech. Both do good deals. also Costco had a really nice HP with an x black screen when i was in last night. Although you may wish to avoid it given the comments above.

I've got an old compaq that has lasted me very well.

Check out laptopshop.co.uk I bought some additional RAM from them & they keep sending me newsletters. They do used, refurbs and new & seem pretty reasonable.

wrt reliability & quality of servive, all I can say is that the RAM I got works & it was delivered pretty promptly.

DELL = overpriced pieces of sh*t IMO.
I bought an Acer laptop at christmas at about half the cost of a same spec DELL and it's been very good. Got it from Comet for around £700 and it was a 2GHz Centrino, 80Gb HDD, 1024MB RAM, DVDRW, 15.4" widescreen
