I'm hearing some rumours, not sure this will be as good news as the last one that ditched.

The last one was a 'controlled ditch' with no injuries.
Fingers crossed for today.

There was nothing controlled about it, the pilot flew it into the sea. He was just really lucky he was slow enough.
Not good news today

Hope they all got out.

Yeah, for some reason it doesn't sound as if it will have as good an outcome as the last ditch.
Looking at the bond flight timetable, my best guess would be that it was enroute back from the Miller floating platform, but a flight to Schiehallion was also in the air at the same time (although thats a lot further away, west of Shetland).
Worrying times for those of us with friends and family offshore.
(Fortunately my wee bro is office based this week.)

Never good when these things happen. Kind of spooks you out a bit. I feel for them. It is a risk we all just accept and often take for granted.

Been out so only just saw this.
First reaction was to phone in, but to be honest, I don't really want to know what happened or who the pilots are. Chances are that apart from half a dozen I would not know them now.
The cause of Mike Tweedies was as I thought, but it sounds as if this one was in the cruise, which points to a pretty catastrophic component failure.

Would have to be nothing short of a total gearbox/head fail I would imagine to take it out so quickly, a double engine fail (Very unlikely assuming they were the same as the RAF puma engines) would mean an unpleasant but controlled auto-rotate ditch.
The Puma's (Admittedly not super Pumas) I used to work with used to have would fly forever on one engine and even without a tail rotor as long as you had 30 odd knots or more of forward speed and the gearbox will run dry of oil for 20 mins or so before failing (In a terminal way) The transit van of the helicopter world.
