My New TV

Post by gordon » Wed Apr 26, 2006 5:51 pm

Had to post up as i'm impressed as hell with this. Been into Hifi for a while but decided to get a decent tv/dvd. Just got the new 37" Panasonic PX60B plasma. Set it all up today. Got it running with a Denon 1920 dvd player and through my amp and hifi speakers (Rotel and B&W) and connected thru HDMI with QED cables. I'm not a big tele watcher, more of a music kinda guy, but this is totally amazing. The rest of the house is still like a building site (hey JJ guess what...... i'm going neutral  ) but got all this set up and it's mind blowing. Was watching the BTCC on Motors tv and it was in car with Plato (and Motors isn't a real good recording usually) . It was actually like being in the car with him. Mind blowing.

If anyone's looking for a good setup, this gives brilliant bang for buck. I'm not into the full surround sound home cinema thing, but this kicks ass

And here's me wondering how i'm not making much ground on saving for the racing.

i think i'll be round shortly to sample this setup with a case of budweiser. 4 or 5 hours of BTCC should do it mate.

Funny you should mention this Gordon (classy piece of kit BTW :D ) - I was looking at the 42" version the other day - I would have bought it too, if only the geezer at the Panasonic shop in Dundee was will to move on the price (he wasn't  )

Can I be cheeky & ask if you got anything off, and if so, where you purchased?

I got mine from web electricals. It's the new model and it was £1422 all in. My mate just bought the previous model a few months ago and paid over £1700 for it. He's spewing  Got the Dvd from HIfi Corner in Falkirk, £250, and was about £160 for the scart/hdmi and phono leads.

read shed loads about them on the net and looked around for ages. Apparently you have to get the right size tv for your room and the distance you'll be away from it. looked at a 42" but my couch is about 8 ft from the wall the tv goes on. It was too big, the picture didn't get really good till you were a good bit away from it. Even on mine the picture looks better if i look at it when i'm at the stairs and thats about another3-4ft further back again.

On the hifi front i've got Rotel RA 02 amp and RCD 02 cd player with Ixos interconnects and Linn K10 cable running B&W dm601 speakers. The speakers were fine in the flat but they seem to be struggling a bit to fill the bigger room now. It seems to have lost all it's oomph and mid range. Plus the wood doesn't match the new furniture so the gf's authorised new speakers  :D :D

fcuk, just read over all that. I sound like a rite hifi geek   . I'm not honest!!!!

i thought the Sony was a fantastic Tv. The blacks are really black. But the speakers are sh*t. Thats ok for the folk who are running it through surround sound systems. But for me most of the time i'll be using the tv speakers until some motor racing comes on or i watch a Dvd.

I'm planning on only using the standard speakers...

Is it true that plasma gives much blacker black than LCD?

I'm no expert. But i think the LCD picture looks a bit unnaturel and forced. I think lcd's only come up to 32 or 37 to be decent. All the big ones look like the picture has just been stretched to fit the screen. This is all just my opinion and might be a load of tosh. I'm one of the folk who believe all the options should be switched off and the picture/sound should be as naturel as possible. The plazma looks so smooth and naturel. Plus you can still get good viewing from side angles for the couch to the side. the lcd fades as you move away to the side slightly. (someone told me this bit, i've yet to see it myself)

I have a 26" curvy "old tech" tube at say 20ft from the sofa - I still find the picture too big :-) I don't understand the obsession with huge TVs - I can actually watch TV from my front room even though I don't have a TV in there - the folks across the road have a massive wall TV thing - unfortunately they likes football, eastenders and all reality/celeb shows ... not to mention the people with the projector telly on the wall - even when you're on the pavement outside their house you still have to pan your head left and right to read the words on the channel guide because they are too long to take in at once :-)
