Hi,
Wendy wants a laptop (nooo.. not a dancer!) and I have been instructed to provide. :?

It will be used for general stuff, nothing hi-tech, no games, no video / dvd burning. Probably just internet surfing / emails / digi photo storing (but not in mega numbers)

I was going to get one of these Compaq thingys .. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/ ... oid=-27751

Any computery folk point me anywhere else thats better for less or isthat ok(ish)?

Jim

Don't buy from pc world, they're much more expensive than anywhere else.

I bought a Compaq laptop 3 weeks ago from PC world and they were cheaper by £50 than any of the online places I looked at using the pricerunner / kelkoo and froogle type sites. So maybe it depends on what it is you are buying.

I am happy with it, it runs the CAD stuff and photoshop I need for work, it has the sony style shiny screen (thats a technical term) and is widescreen.

Thumbs up from me.

Personally I think that's way overpriced.
I bought this:

at xmas for slightly more than it is now. It's a much higher spec for only £40 more. But for what Jim wants, I would spend anything more than about £450.

Dell are sh*t too, their prices always seem attractive until you try and actually buy one then they bump it up to get the spec they advertise. We have Dells at work and the quality is iffy too IMO. We've had a load of them break for various reasons.

I would like to avoid pc world if possible. Had a bad experience there once before, but they do seem to be cheaper on some things than others.

Jim,
They are not cheap but the sony laptops are fantastic. The Xblack screen is the one to go for too it's night and day to a standard TFT.
Toshiba and others are doing this screen now at a cheaper price than the sony ones so have a look arround.
Will you be carrying the laptop about or will it be a desktop replacement? If you will be carrying it about go for something like a Sony S series spec another brand with the same spec will be cheaper.
Have a look at Novatech and ebuyer, both on line.

Ebuyer gets my vote - they have cracking (but short lived) deals if you are quick. 8)
