Towing kit

Post by Stephen » Thu Mar 30, 2006 9:38 am

I thought it may be worth pulling this together into a single thread.
I would suggest that you need the following for the rear.

Either
2x Image

This is alloy and rated at 18kN ( 2.5 Elises)
Or one of the double eye/jacking bars that Stu is looking into.
1x Rich tow rope (Rich consider climbing rope as it's a smaller dia for the same load and is dynamic)

To link the towing eyes with either of the above I would suggest something llike this

this could be made up much cheaper with a quickdraw

and length of tubular climbing tape with some elastic run through it.
If we use the tubular tape with a length of elastic cord run through it then we could clip it on for track days and clip the centre krab on where the exhaust exits on the S1 to keep it accessible and out of the gravel. I think that if a centre krab is used and allowed to run free then the loads should be spread between both eyes.

Those petzl links would be great, even come with the right size bolt! Also if you had any more Dukes of Hazzard type takeoffs you could get two trails of sparks if you tried hard enough!

The shock corded tape is a neat solution too, if we can find some way of reliably (And robustly) stitching it all together. How hot does it get under the diffuser?

The problem with climbing rope is it is a real pig to put permanent eyes into. It is possible but will take ages. I did consider dynamic types of rope (Cotton rag rope is great for this) but again it gets expensive, especially if your going to have it dangling under the car!

The running carabina is a good idea, as is the stowage under the car, for extra durability (and lower cost) how about these links in place of crabs:

Even if we used non shock corded rope the eye could be clipped to a point bolted to one of the rear grills (S2 I'd have to look) then you don't have to dig under the car if you are axles deep (God forbid!) in kittylitter.

Rich,
The rope and tape could just be knotted although stitching is better.
Tape sling knot for the tape and a fisherman's for the rope. Just let the knot slide up to the krab and hay presto.
An alternative would be to crimp the rope into an eye. Should be able to get crimps from a chandlers.

The quick link you suggest above is good and stronger than a krab but as krabs are allreay rated at 3.5 elises and are £5 each and quicker then I would go with them.

If the internal shock cord proves a problen then an alternative would be to tie a small loop of shock cord to the car (Grille or the like) and clip into it. This may be a better idea as it would be quicker/cheaper and easier to replace the shock cord if it snaps.

What do you think?
