My new zaust

Post by jamie » Sun Mar 26, 2006 9:45 pm

This afternoon Jim came down to Edinburgh to give me a hand with something we have been chatting about for sometime now. The concept was to produce a track friendly, single exit exhaust designed similar to an Arqray but to take the extra flow of the up coming SC.
Here are some pics of the standard and the Tubular zausts.

And big thank you for Mark who kindly allowed us to use his garage and tools. I owe you a beer when you are next in Dublin J

The old zaust was taken out as was the rear panel and heat shielding.
Image
The Heat shielding had to be trimmed
Image
The size of the box is quite large but seems to work well
Image
Had to do a bit of a short-term fix for the diffuser struts and number plate holder
Image
Really pleased with the finished look and that fact the 4x4 number plate fits!

Jim tells me the box will get louder with the extra gas flow from the SC but as is I am guessing its similar to the stage 1. Both Mark and myself were impressed with the quality of the noise too. It is defiantly quieter than the Larini on Marks car. Jim recons it’s about 98db but that could rise with the Sc to closer to 101db.

Its a bold change :D Look forward to hearing it, any idea of gains or will it only show up when the SC is fitted?

Liking the custom rear eliminator kit a lot.

I'd be surprised if in traffic in summer if the no. plate didnt go all soft or bendy with the heat!

Jim tells me and I have heard it before, the standard Lotus item is so good that you will be luck to get gains in standard form. The Stage 2 and Larini both have been seen to loose power.
This zaust is designed for the sc thus why the pipe is so wide. (you can actually look straight through the middle! Cutting out the bends will improve gas flow too. Have a sports cat to follow too.
If you contact Jim he already has n/a zausts of this style the US guys love them.

The number plate I was worried about but apparently jim's zaust give very little heat off. If there is a problem I have plenty of heat shielding :D

Looks nice Jamie. :)
I guess you could duct some air from the (now redundant) hole in the undertray to keep it cool if required. You know it's gonna be a bugger to keep clean. ;)

Cheers,
Ali

Looks good, and having had a quick ride in the car last night it sounds pretty fab too 8) . Quieter and less raspy than my Larini, though with the Pipercross on Jamie's car too the overall noise levels in the cabin seemed similar. We should probably do some comparison vids of the Tubular and Larini drive by and in cabin.

What was it like on a steady fast cruise on the way home? Any resonance?

Mark

Looked and sounded sweet - kind of a really nice mix between a stage 1 and stage 2!
