Cheap Second Car

Post by Titanium S1 111S (gla) » Tue Mar 07, 2006 2:51 pm

second car

Have been thinking about a second car, I recon I want something that ticks the boxes the Elise misses so not worried about fast or pretty. A bit of off road / towing ability would be good and space for a few people and some stuff.

First thought Landrover 110, but came to the conclusion that the comfort box would be missed by that one. I’d have two cars, neither of which I’d want to do a long motorway journey in.

Second thought, Freelander, not a bad option but would want the TD and you are looking at £4k for that so a bit more than I want to spend.

Conclusion, Daihatsu Fortrak 2.8 TDX. Anybody know anything about them?

Cheers

Graham

Engineering out of the dark ages, but sturdy wee feckers.

Looked at older TD Discos?

I had originally ruled the Discovery out on the grounds of thirst but since I seem to be up at 2.8 I suppose I should be looking at them again. I have done a bit of work on Discoverys over the years, they’re dead simple and the parts are cheap so probably not a bad option.

Am also thinking that a K-Series Freelander maybe even one which is going for buttons with HGF. It only takes half a day to sort out if not F’d and probably get one cheap as chips.

2K’s better than one?

Heh - pulling hair out on both sides of your head?

Probably makes a degree of sense to have a shared parts stock...

If I was looking for a second car I would go back to a 406 coupe SE 2.2 HDi. Quite cheap now, built like a tank as they galvanised everything, electrics can be a little dicky but with a bit of know how (And some soldering) can be made good. Motorway cruiser, 45 mpg+, leather everything, electric everything, 4 real seats (6' in the rear seats) a boot you could sleep a familty of 4 in, CD changer + amp as standard.

Or go for the V6 for a bit of motorway chewing action (But 25mpg tops)

Well I like them.

The gas conversion is not a half bad idea. V8 power, TDI fuel bill.

I had looked at spending a bit more and getting a TD4 Freelander but came to the conclusion that if I was going to spend another £6 or £7K on a car that I’d still rather get a cheaper second and couple it with an upgrade to the rocket powered roller skate (S2 111s?). So am back to looking at the cheaper options.

I need to tow the odd boat and it would be useful to have the 4x4 ability for launch and recovery plus a bit of irresponsible off road fun.

Think I’ll maybe avoid the S1 Landy this time round. I just sold my S2A a few months ago. It had a Perkins diesel conversion so could tow small inshore islands but I always found the top speed of 38.5 MPH a little bit limiting. Cornering wasn’t all it might have been either.

So what's your budget Graham?

Or does it depend on the car?

As I said my Cherokee is availabe it's a W 2000 reg, 2.5 TD.

Seems to fit the bill as to what you are looking for.

I'm asking for £4,650 for it....

Cheers

John

38.5? Speedo indicated maybe, well somewhere between 24-53 anyway. I have the elise for the corners, the landie is for top down motoring in a straight (ish) line for very short trips! (Petrol Stn and back) and it was free. 25 mpg, but thats quite alot of oil....
