Article on Autoexpress www

Look out Porsche – the new Lotus Eagle is almost ready to swoop.

Auto Express can exclusively reveal the best spy shots yet of the new Lotus flagship that promises to propel the Norfolk based firm back into the supercar premier league. As you can see, the aggressive lines and low stance show that Lotus means business!

Rumoured to be powered by a twin-turbo V8 BMW engine shared with the new X6, the mid-engined model will sprint from 0-60mph in around 4.0 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 175mph.

Codenamed the Eagle, it’s not yet known what the high performance model will be called in showroom ready form. All will be revealed when the Lotus makes its official debut at the British Motor Show in July.

I suspect the sharp angles are not going to be on the finished car, at least I hope they are not.

I thought the Esprit was getting the Beemer twin-turbo and the Eagle was getting the V6 Yota? I doubt it will need to do anything like 4.0 secs to 60mph just to compete with the lardy Coxter...

Hope I'm wrong though...

Sounds like the usual twaddle from Auto Express. The Eagle is almost certainly not going to be powered by a V8 - that is going to be the Esprit, which is not coming untill 2009 at the earliest. Mike Kimerley has said that the Eagle's engine is coming from 'an existing engine supplier', which means it is most likely to be a tweaked Toyota 3 litre V6. I have always though of Auto Express as The Sun of the motoring press - nuff said :)

www.carmagazine.co.uk wrote:We know Lotus will use a Toyota engine (as it does on the Elise), so this V6 is almost certainly the same motor that powers a number of Toyota products across the Pond. In the Camry the 24-valve V6, which has variable valve timing, produces 262bhp at 6200rpm and 248lb ft at 4700rpm. Don’t expect those figures to change much in the production Eagle.

Graeme from MMC was saying it's a 3.5 290bhp Lexus V6 that will be in the Eagle. Seems to have an elise shaped grille under the disguise anyway.

Interesting. If that is right it should have a power to weight ratio way in excess of the Cayman S, which I guess the main competition. I really hope it turns out to be a good 'un. After the Europa flop Lotus desperately needs this one to succeed.
