Wondering if anyone could recommend a decent hotel in New York. Taking the g/f for the weekend next month. Looking to stay in Manhattan. Been looking at websites and cant make up my mind.

I've stayed at a few in New York and i would definately recommend the Marriott Marque in Times Square...

Hotel/Rooms/Staff are all great - and the location is the best possible..!

A lot of people think that the rooms would be noisy at night as its right in the middle of Times Square but the complete opposite - sound proofed to the max!

Also stayed in the Waldorf and Ritz-Carlton at Central which were gorgeous but prefered to be in the heart of it all..

Know few other people have been to different places on here but if you need any info give me a shout!

We stayed in the Wellington, just up from Time SQ.

It was quite basic, but to be honest we were out all the time seeing the sights and shows.

I have recommended the hotel to a few freinds in the past and they all said it was good.

O and it is quite cheap in comparison with Plaza etc.

As it is under contruction for the next year to turn half of it into flats...

Within the last couple of months I have enjoyed the sublime: - a week in a suite at the Waldorf Astoria to the (nearly) ridiculous:- a week in The Carter Hotel on Times Square.

Somewhere like the Waldorf would be great if you intend to spend a lot of time in the hotel enjoying the accomodation, but you really pay for that luxury. Somewhere like The Carter would be great if you intend to use the hotel as a place to sleep and use the money you save in accomodation doing all the other stuff NY has to offer.

I agree with the recommendations for the Waldorf. My wife and I satyed there for our 10th Wedding anniversary a coiple of years ago, and it was excellent. I've also stayed in the Jolly Madison, which is on Madison avenue a couple of blocks south of times square, which was good. http://www.jollymadison.com/

The last time we were there we stayed in the Beacon, which I really liked. It's quite a cheap place to stay, but has lots of advantages. It's on the upper West side, right by the Beacon theatre. A couple of blocks away from the park. There's a handy subway station nearby for getting around. The room we had had a small kitchen area, which meant that we could have cooked from the handy supermarket across the road, although we didn't, In fact a lot of the rooms/suites are lived in permanently by New Yorkers. While staying there we felt almost like residents, which was fun.

While you're there, if you like Italian food you should try out my favourite New York Resteraunt, http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2 ... _city-i.We go every time we're there. Always excellent, just leave rook the for Cannoli.

Also at the top end, we could recommend the St Regis.

If price is not an issue Essex House at central park is second to none...

Stayed there a few years ago now and it was perfect in every way!

The missus and I stayed at the Sheraton on Times Square in January and it ticked all the boxes for us, we were on the 29th floor and had a fantastic view down Broadway and over the Manhattan skyline.
Like almost everywhere in New York the service was second to none and we could not fault it in any way.
Unfortunately I have no idea how much it costs to stay there as it was part of our package while sailing on the Qe2

We stayed in The Casablanca Hotel. Boutique type of place. Mid priced and great location just off Times Sq.

If it's a cheap/cheerful type hotel, try the Bedford Hotel in midtown, only a block or so from Grand Central. (http://www.bedfordhotel.com) Stayed there 6 or 7 times and always been very happy. At the top end can't beat The 4 Seasons with a Park View Suite; great views over the park - even from the bath!!

I'm over there twice a year so a couple of other places to look at are:

The Benjamin - my current favourite. The g/f will like the pillow menu where you can choose from about 12 fillings. Located just behind the Waldorf (which I didn't like when I stayed there - too impersonal and busy - big queues to check in, for breakfast, check out etc. http://www.thebenjamin.com/

If you are just going for 1 or 2 nights, the Times Square hotels would be fine, but any longer and I am sure it would do your head in. A place you've got to see but has become quite trashy now.
