Illegal to accelerate?

Post by gorrie » Sun Sep 23, 2007 5:52 pm

WTF... I just got pulled ... because I accelerated up to the speed limit quicker than a cop van... Didn't realise accelerating was measured now.

Car in front waiting to turn right in a 30 zone (no pavements).. when it finally turned I got straight up to speed. I had already clocked the van 2 behind me, so definitely wasn't gonna be gunning it anyway. My exhaust must have woken them up or something.

Anyway, got to a mini-roundabout (which is almost a straight over job) with no cars at any entrance, took it at 25-30... next thing, blue light, headlights going as they overtook the person behind me. My first thought was that there was no way it was for me so indicated and trundled at 10mph so they could overtake... but no, they sat on my butt.

Pulled in... 2 women in it...

Me: Hello !!
WPC: "Is this your car sir?"
Me: Yes it is.
WPC: "And what speed would you call that?"
Me: 30
WPC: "Oh.. erm.. Well you seemed to be going faster than that as you pulled away from us"
Me: Yes, that's because this car can accelerate quite quickly... and I admit that I got up to the 30 quickly... but no more.. I wasn't gunning it... meanwhile you were behind another car
WPC: We were behind another car, and saw you pulling away..
Me: Yes..
WPC: "And you continued to pull away"
Me: Yes, because I didn't need to slow down for the mini-roundabout as it was clear and the car is more than capable enough to handle that.
WPC: "Oh, right.. well.. I know you have a nippy car but I'd warn you to take it easy".
Me: But I wasn't speeding.
WPC: Yes, well... just, eh, on you go now.

Jeeze... I guess the main reason is because my exhaust disturbed their conversation about lipstick or something.. and they saw a yellow car and wondered if it would match their new nail polish.

Andy.

what a load of pish m8.

Nothing better to do.
They could have measured your speed by sitting behind you at 30 and if you pulled away they could then pull you but its a very unreliable way of catching you speeding, which you were not so they would have been able to tell you were not.

Should have taken their badge no. and reported them for wasting your time, they would be quick enough to do it to you.

Thought about that after I'd pulled off again... I was to busy thinking about whether to get a white or rose' wine when I got to the shops...

could you be potentially done for dangerous driving if you accelerate too quickly?

Yep, its classed as dangerous driving, they dont see you as being in full control of the car :? :? :?

They need to go out and catch real criminals instead of this kind of rubbish

I'd like to see that definition.... Dangerous Driving, not in control accelerating to 30...

I got pulled in my mini a couple of years ago saying i pulled out a junction too quickly and the police car had to "lightly" apply the brakes....

Me slowing them down made my driving dangerous.. Apparntly.....

Anyway they followed me from Commy Pool to my house in Clerwood, had called my dad by this time and he was standing outside waiting on them. Official appology in writing after a complaint was made for trying to "intimidate" me..! Plus my dad knows the CEO of the Met Police which helped

After the complaint ive never had any problems with them... So obv works!

Dangerous driving for accelerating swiftly . . . nonsense! In the police and IAM advanced driving tests, you are encouraged to accelerate swiftly away from hazards. A junction or roundabout is a hazard and you are taught to get up to speed swiftly and away from the hazard, where an accident is more likely to occur.

Obviously, they don't want you to wheel spin away from 5000rpm, but they do teach swift acceleration, so how the hell can they try to claim it's dangerous driving?! :rage
