...long story short, someone I know sent an email through webmail (blueyonder/ Virgin) to someone that really wasnt meant to see it.
We're talking job loss, employment tribunal type of stuff here!

I know how to recall emails through outlook, but never used blueyonder webmail before...

Also, If its going across email exchange servers, you cant always recall it-can you?

not possible

if it was sent from their webmail server, it will shoot straight out directly to the recipients mail server for processing. As there is no recall function as part of the SMTP mail protocol, there's no way to get it back....

Outlook is different - if the mail you sent is to remain inside your company, the mail will remain inside the microsoft exchange server. You can then tell outlook to "unsend" the message.

Was the destination mail address an internet one, or a company one? Your only chance here is to "remove" the mail at the destination...... But that's naughty & difficult.....

PS.... It's very easy to forge SMTP mail - you can send a message and make it look like its come from anyone on any account....

Think whoever sent is screwed

The only possible solution, is IF the other end hasnt yet checked their webmail, AND they havent downloaded it from the server via POP3 (or other service), AND you know their password and can log into their account on webmail and delete before its read / downloaded.

Failing that, get whoever sent it to claim someone hacked their mail account, then get a friend to admit to doing so, problem solved....if they buy it.

Starts sending loads of emails and say the computer has a virus . They might not look at them all .

Can big attatchments be used to fill up their email box and screw it up ?

I know nothing of IT just a thought.

No way you can unsend thatone - a lot of public organisations even archive inbound mail before its delivered to the user for data compliance purposes... Even if you gain access to the user in questions mailbox and delete the message, it will still be lurking in the system....

Also, as it was sent from a webmail account, the SMTP mail headers will be tracable to a webmail session. However, it is still very easy to make a message appear as if its come from someone else...

I would claim ignorance - the work that will be required to PROVE that the mail origionated from a given webmail account will be huge.

The interested parties would have to gain a court order to search the source mailbox & prove it was sent from there - privacy laws will work in your favour here.....

Agree, just create a lot of confusion and panic and blame something/one else.

Go to an internet cafe and bombard there e-mail with stuff from a hotmail/googlemail account! That may work!

thanks folks - I think its not as bad as first thought.

It was the husband of a girl I know who works for them that sent the email to her boss by mistake - slagging them off.
As it was not her that sent it, I imagine it wont stand for anything other than him being the dog house for a while.
